Technology in Education. By Laura and Graciela

Hello, We are Laura and Graciela. We saw the video about “Technology in education” and also “The history of technology in education”. The first one makes us think if we use technology effectively or we have a powerful tool that we don’t really take advantage of. Technology allows our students and us to be creative, work in groups, keep engage with games, songs and activities and the most important thing is that the subject we teach allows our students to communicate and use language in a productive and personal way. And the second one it’s a kind of childlike story in order to understand the evolution of technology through the history of humanity, it’s very simple so as to keep in mind how technology has improved along many centuries.

Both videos share the idea that technology is a great and powerful tool to use in education. And it has been in that way since prehistoric times. With the passing of time technology has evolved for the better and kept its importance in relation to education. But if we don’t use it in a smart way it’s just another misused tool.

It's not such a clear message but if you look deep inside and think about both videos we think the main idea is to use technology in a good and productive way. To use it in order to improve our classes and not just as something that is fashionable. It's a challenge to find the correct and engaging way to use technology in our classes. Our students need to learn about the world that surrounds us because they are going to use the language to communicate.

We think that the videos are updated because they make us realized about our teaching practices today, even though they may have some years on the web.

They don’t reflect our everyday teaching because we don’t have access to most of the tools used nowadays worldwide. We have to try to get the best of our students with just a handful tools available. We as a third world country are really far away from the use of this kind of technology in most of our public or private schools.

The title of the following video summarises the central idea : a magical story. It was like magic how things changed for both teachers and students with the arrival of technology. And how their learning strategies changed for the better. It shows the infinite ways in which technology can be used to enrich and make classes more dynamic and engaging. It shows how real classes became alive with the correct use of technology.

We haven’t heard the term WORD CLOUD before but we’ve seen some and found them quite interesting.

WORD CLOUDS ( also known as text clouds or tag clouds) work in a simple way: the more a specific word appears in a source of textual data (such as a speech, blog post, or database), the bigger and bolder it appears in the word cloud. Both videos have in common the topic of technology. They talk about how it was used in education during the development of the mankind and in nowadays, and also the correct use of technology in education. On the other hand, they questioned the use of technology in a very suitable way, for example in the first video, Hamilton asked: "What world will our students exit school into? And what skills they need to be successful? We need technology to foster these skills and point your students in the right direction?” The idea which they want to transmit is that people question if it is really necessary the use of technology for the day to day education.

2. We think that the hidden message is not to prohibit the use of technology for the students in a classroom. The correct technique is learning to combine the use of modern things but creating different ways to be creative and communicative. The message that is presented is that technology and education are closely related and if we want to be good teachers someday, we have to learn how to take advantage of technologies and use them to teach and explain.

3. We think that these videos are recently updated because they talk about a predicament that is really important today and it’s true that people spend money in technological things.

4. In our opinion, it reflects our reality today because technology has been growing since many years ago and now it has an important impact in our life, consequently it has begun to be used in education because it is a useful and easier way to transmit information. Although, not in all cases because some people continue with the traditional classes and in some locations they make use of the technology to learn.

The two videos deal with the close relationship that exists between technology and education and how one of them influences the other and vice versa.

“The history of technology in education” talks about the evolution of the different tools that were considered technologies at certain times and how they helped to develop many activities to facilitate education and learning. At the same time, it also shows that the whole process that someone carries out will influence its life later, for example if they learn with different technologies, when they become teachers they will be able to apply them to their students, consequently, what we do in the present can shape the class of tomorrow.

“Technology in education” talks about the objectives of including technology in schools and how to use it. There are different ways in which technology can be part of our life: ineffectively, productively, in dangerous ways, to improve our environment, among others. We must think about abilities such as creativity, imagination, communication, collaboration, critical thinking and how technology can help us develop and apply them inside and outside the school.

The technology isn't just a caprice, but necessary nowadays. The age of the massive and simultaneous data manipulation is enforcing itself. Technology would no probably be a stranger at all, but also it would not be associated it with school and that's a mistake. Internet is the biggest provider of data and knowledge, an infinite source of sources, it's just like a colossal book which allows you to surf into the deep, and so if it is the case why not try to learn to read that book and use their provided tools?

On the other hand, technology is useful in itself but it can have positive or negative consequences depending on how it is used. One of the profitable ways is using technology to develop student’s critical thinking skills and let them get ‘stuck’ and ‘unstuck’. It is important to create a classroom environment in which students are problem solvers and learn a lot of strategies to be successful in a future. In conclusion, technology is a beneficial and practical instrument to evolve abilities like communication, synthesis, analysis, problem solving and reflection as long as it is efficient, allows cognitive development and everyone has access to it.

We are both agree that the relationship between education and technology is completely necessary. They needed each other. Together are unstoppable.

They have in common the fact that they try to demonstrate what benefits have, besides the traditionals elements used in the past. These videos show us the evolution and how the education has improve all the time. Also, these videos focuses in the idea of using techonology responsibly.

We think that the videos probably need a little refresh because don't show the uses of the technology right now on classes.

As a we said before, these videos don't show us the completely reality of how technology is used, especially in our context. This year, in classes we used these tools a lot. Especially when we have to share information, for homeworks, extra activities, extra practice, practical works, etc.

But we think that sometimes is difficult to introduce technology in schools. Some of them doesn't have wi-fi connection or computers. And in some other schools, cellphones are still forbidden.

In our opinion, techonology is completely essential. Especially when we tried to learn for ourselves. In the internet, we found a lot of information about any them. In our process of learning a foreign language, with the technology, we found a source which helps us at the time of practising or when we want to go deep on a particular lesson.

https://youtube.com/watch?v=jmUuBjwcKOc&feature=youtu.be

https://www.businessinsider.com/how-technology-is-shaping-the-future-of-education-2017-12

https://www.forbes.com/sites/quora/2018/05/04/how-education-and-technology-are-evolving-together/

Students:
Chacana, Mariano (MUN° 2850)
Pacheco, Micaela (MUN° 2851)

Hi, everyone! It's Maga, Ayelén Amaya and Emmanuel Barros.
As regards the videos, we think that they are quite updated although not completely. However, they work well in order to establish a relationship between technology and education and their evolution through history. Also, they made us reflect about how our educational system works nowadays. That is to say, how lessons are delivered and if they are really updated and connected to the technological context in which we are living. We strongly believe that in the future, as teachers, we will have to know how to work with technology in the classroom and to be aware of the changes in the process of teaching and learning.

We found this interesting video about ICT and education, hope you like it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tXs5O1yGlg4

And this is an article about about the importance of ICT in education: http://www.iosrjournals.org/iosr-jrme/papers/Vol-1%20Issue-4/B0140308.pdf

Today we will focus on the relationship between technology and education

1. First, watch these two videos
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aXyCECMxhOs

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UFwWWsz_X9s

2. Think over this:
- What do they have in common? What do they both refer to?

Both videos refer to the importance of technology in education. What they have in common is to show the importance of technology in the classroom and to inspired us to use it in a correct ways to point our students in the right direction. The video by Hamilton suggest us to make ourselves some questions to notice if we are using technology in a right way. The other video show how successful could be a person by using technology in a right way and the importance of a teacher to be updated with new advanced technology.

- If I told you there's a hidden message for YOU, what would it be?

I think could be the importance to be updated with new advanced technology or to integrate technology effectively and meaningfully into teaching and learning? I’m not sure.

- How updated are these videos? Disregard the dates of publication.

It’s a difficult question to answer. I think they are well updated but according to my basic knowledge on technology. I think that to know How so well updated they are, I should be well updated first haha.

- Do they reflect our reality, i.e. how technology is used in education in our context?

No so well. I think that sometimes we don’t make a right use of technology at schools because of lots of reasons, sometimes because of lack of material, lack money, lack of time considering that in some schools the time for English lessons don´t take long, students assist to English lessons three or four times a week, and sometimes some parents don’t take importance to English lessons. And finally and the most important reason, because of lack of knowledge about technology.

3. Now, in this PADLET,
https://padlet.com/luna_edithelizabeth/2aso2viiunpf

a) Comment on the videos (use the questions but also your own ideas, perspectives, views, etc. too)
b) Suggest a third video that summarizes your point of view:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HCi8rRfIw-8

c) Add a Google doc, an article, a blog, slides, etc. that have to do with your views, too, to back up your thoughts:
d) Comment on other people's post-its in the Padlet, too

4. Have you heard of the term WORD CLOUDS? Do you what they are used for, how they work?

a. Look for webpages to create WORD CLOUDS. Choose a text on Web. 3.0 and make your own word cloud to be shared in Padlet.
b. Share the word cloud image in Padlet but bellow, refer to how this may/may not help teaching nowadays, from your viewpoint.
That's all folks!

I strongly suggest you to work in pairs or groups of no more than three people. Otherwise, there will be way too many post-its in the wall.
However, if you happen not to agree on what to say for and against, feel free to post individually.

Both have in common the issue of technology in education and use in schools.- I think that the hidden message is about the importance of using technology to teach.- I believed that these videos are 10 years ago, because in some of them, the one that mentions the timeline in the history of technology in education, arrives until 2010 and, from now until 2018, more resources are used, such as virtual classrooms. - Not at all, because there are a lot of teachers who aren't using tecnology in schools.

After watching both videos and discussing about their content, we concluded that the thing in common between them revolves around the demonstration of benefits that come from using technology as a tool for learning.

There´s a not-so-hidden message in all of this, actually. From what we can observe in Hamilton’s video, there must be a guidance for the individual to learn how to use and take advantage of technology in a safe way, so that danger could be avoided. Throughout the years we’ve observed how technology evolved, and how it helped education to improve and reach a new stage where it’s easier and more efficient.

Even though these videos are a tad outdated, they’re still useful in the means of showing us how important and necessary is to intertwine technology and education. Perhaps a little update could have perks for today’s students to familiarize themselves with the use of new devices.

It is important to take account of the pros and cons of its use, and to always investigate and find ways to fully comprehend this new technological era, and to be aware of how to exploit it and gain wonderful experiences.

We provide here a TED Talk, a showcase for speakers where they present innovating, greatly executed ideas under 18 minutes. In this conference, Jason Brown, an A level student from Wymondham High Academy, presents the topic of "Redefining Learning & Teaching usng Technology"
―――――――――――――――――
✧ Cruz, Matías
✧ Ogas, Renata
✧ Quinteros, Micaela
