Everyone in this story has been in relationships before the one they're in now, and Mel acknowledges, even with lots of experience about love, that they're all still "beginners at love." He says "Sometimes I have a hard time accounting for the fact that I must have loved my first wife too," and he knows that feelings can grow and change. In the most extreme case, where one person dies, Mel says "the surviving party would go out and love again, have someone else soon enough." He describes it as "the day-to-day caring about the other person." I think the idea that love is lots of small, everyday actions is pretty realistic. This relates to when Nick says that for him and Laura, its just easy being together, which is really important in a relationship

Ed "loved her so much he tried to kill her," and I think that fundamentally isn't love. Mel says that "Terri's of the kick-me-so-I'll-know-you-love-me school," and I just can't agree with that. I think that it's not love but that it's toxic. Nobody should say they love someone to the extent that they would kill them.
