In this case, we are focusing on understanding the challenges of our region.

-Lack of education for children in Western Africa.

-The percentage of children not in school, in Western Africa (2019):

• 27 percent of primary school-age children.

• 37 percent of lower-secondary school-age children.

• 56 percent of upper-secondary school-age children.

Specific reasons why there is a lack of education:

• Inadequate funding.

• Corruption.

• Inadequate infrastructural facilities.

• Shortage of academic staff.

• Weak administrators and insecurity.

  
  

-Created a problem statement for Nigeria:

• In Nigeria 10.5 million children are not in school because of the lack of strong education systems.

-Nigeria would benefit from an education system that would:

• Help decrease levels of poverty.

• Help people receive higher paying jobs.

-Our re-defined problem statement:

• Over 10.5 million children in Nigeria are not in school, or getting proper education. We will be building small affordable schools aiming for grades 6-8 (ages 12-14).

  
  

• Implement structure in a few states within northern Nigeria.

• Help aid keeping children in school by having better resources and support for education.

• Start off small, measure success by seeing how many kids stayed in the program/ continued their education afterward.

-Took time in class to gather materials and discuss the general layout and form of our school.

-Specific things we wanted to include in our design:

• Have something small = keep the school affordable and adaptable.

• Keeping in mind the dry and warmer weather in Nigeria (Wanted to include windows, and a suitable roof for the weather, AC for warmer temperatures).

• Keeping the school mobile = a non-permanent structure that would help get the ball rolling for education within the country.

-Discussed added changes to make:

• Small building with multiple teachers.

  • Not a replacement, school would be considered extra help.

• AC (warmer weather in the region).

• Start off with only building two schools to see how well the program is taken.

• Implement the schools in two towns in northern Nigeria.

• Gain support/ funding through "United for Education Foundation" (Helps aid in educating youth in Nigeria).

-Brainstormed things that we could implement that would help aid this severe lack of education.

-Came up with several potential solutions:

• Building better schools.

• Providing better technologies/teachers.

• Having non-profits involved and aid in transportation/general resources.

• Having a system in place to encourage kids to stay in school.
