This formative assessment is classic, and time consuming for the students to complete, however its tangible, and the teacher can read them and check in with students whom are not understanding the lesson concepts.
I think entrance/exit tickets would be a nice change for her, and her students. This would take less time for both the students, and herself to read/grade.

I watched the Video of integrating writing into visual arts. I noticed as she was introducing the vocabulary she had them repeat, allowing her to hear that they were saying it correctly. She also had anchor charts for them to reference as they were working to ensure they were making the correct shapes for the animal legends they were portraying. Students helped make rubrics at the start of the year and were referencing them as they worked. After they had created their art work, they developed their own legends using graphic organizers. Before creating their final draft of their story, students used a checklist and referenced the rubric to be sure they were proceeding correctly. The formative assessment really was student driven, and I liked that!

I spend a lot of time with the engagement factor of my lesson. If they are not interested, or have some kind of connection, they won't have the best learning experience they can. I also do a lot of check in for comprehension in my lessons, a quick formative assessment of their understanding of the concept to ensure they aren't being left out of the learning experience in some way.

When they completed their paintings, they conferenced with the teacher using those 2 tools to determine if they completed the project the way they were instructed to. I love how she tied in writing and then a play with the lesson. Another formative assessment was the story map/outline that the kids filled in before writing their stories. This is a great way to check on their ideas for the story and make sure it has complete ideas before they begin to write.

I do believe I use some strategies of UDL in my classroom right now however I look forward to adding some of the ideas I learned in the webinar today. I also learned some strategies at a UDL training I went to at the county office earlier this year( lots of ideas for brain breaks for kids.) I plan to attend the Summer boot camp at our county office on UDL and I am excited to continue to learn about it and be given time to plan purposeful UDL lessons keeping all my students in mind. I feel fortunate to have a set of class chrome books to help give students options for learning the new material as well as showing me what they know. I recently had kids choose weather they wanted to type their biography they wrote, make a flip grid, or do a green screen to publish there work. They loved getting to choose and I loved seeing all the different things they did.

I believe that I use many UDL practices within my classroom. First off, I started off with a universal classroom management design of flexible seating allowing students to move around the room to find the best place for their learning. All projects are designed to be completed in the students choice. We work on "publishing" our work in a variety of ways, through technology, group work, and plan old pen and paper. Students discuss with each other about what works best for them and then follow the rubric for the assignment. I also allow students to listen to music while working and for them to work outside the classroom in the sunshine if they so choose.

I watched "Art Integration: The Element of Dance". The teacher used a lot of question and answers. She also held open discussions for the classmates where they got to answer and build off of one another. She also used some scaffolding where she started from the beginning, and then continued to build and demonstrate on each skill. She had students quickly demonstrate for one another to get a quick formative assessment. She used whole group, small group, and individual demonstrations to help with vocabulary building and understanding. For the day, the class came up with their rubric for that specific lesson's assessment. The students knew what to expect and they assessed each other also. I think she could expand her formative assessment by including a jornal where students have some time to write down a take away. Almost like an exit ticket but for personal use where they can reflect on how they are growing. I feel like they are doing a lot of group talking. It seems like it might be beneficial to have individual quiet time to really dive into what their personal take away is.

I love the UDL guidelines for teaching and learning. I am only a few years out of the Credential Program through Chico State and Universal Design for Learning was a big talking point during my program. Everything we were teaching was basically based around the idea of having accessible content that support appropriate learning. For a lot (most) teachers this is a "duh" statement. However, there is SO much more we can do to better that practice. I have our schedule on the board in pictures, PECs, and spelled out to reach all students. My goal right now is to teach something more than one way. For example, I want to show the students what I want them to know, I want to let them try, I want to give them the opportunity to just listen, and to watch. This way, it hits all learning methods that students are strong in. I also want to not only build off of background knowledge, but provide it without necessarily telling them it is happening. I want to give them an experience, and then build off of it to engage all learners. Especially in a low income, kindergarten classroom. Some students do not have the same opportunities as others outside of the classroom. I would like to build that phenomena.

I watched the K-2 dance one. I really liked that he had the student engage in creating the criteria. This was a good way for him to assess whether or not they really understood the different components of dance before they actually danced. The journals were also a good way to see what take aways they were getting and how they could articulate their thoughts about the dance. I would love to have seen some partnering work during the negative and positive space lesson where partner A had to explain positive space and partner B had to explain negative space as a way to check for understanding.

Linda Smith
In the video- integrating writing
She used many formative assessments. She had the students repeat vocab word, they had an anchor chart for the shapes and she went around and saw that students were using those shapes. I liked that they created a rubric together as a class. They had check lists and a conference with the students. She was constantly checking in for understanding. I liked that they used one student's writing to write a script and then preform a play.

It is always good to get new ideas. Many of these things we may already do, but we need to be mindful and purposeful. Many of these strategies are thought of for a specific group of students but all can benefit from them.
