Iyer is still one of the most respected travel writers today. Iyer was educated at Oxford University and got his masters in literature from Harvard University. He currently lives in Japan.  " The Joy of Less"  appeared in the New York Times  in 2009 as part of a series on "spiritual literacy." During 2009, The Great Recession was a period of general economic decline observed in world markets during the late 2000s and early 2010s.  Iyer's main argument is  that you are never satisfied with what you have. He states that happiness is often comes around when it's not pursued.  Iyer wrote this during that time in order to make his audience feel better.

Twain was born in Florida, but grew up in the river town of Hannibal, Missouri where he watched the comings and goings of the steamboats he would eventually pilot. He wrote this after the Civil War,he began a career as a humorist. One has to get out of their default setting in order to view life differently, life coming to be ones career that can be boring as we age.
