The recommended limits for 16 different drugs have been approved with a ‘zero tolerance’ approach to illegal drugs and ‘therapeutic’ levels set on medicines (see ‘What are the new UK drug-drive limits?’).

It is also introducing drug-screening devices to improve the detection of drug-drivers with the new regulations due to come into force this autumn.

Different types of drugs affect your body in different ways, and the effects associated with drugs can vary from person to person. How a drug effects an individual is dependent on a variety of factors including body size, general health, the amount and strength of the drug, and whether any other drugs are in the system at the same time. It is important to remember that illegal drugs are not controlled substances, and therefore the quality and strength may differ from one batch to another. 

Drugs can have short-term and long-term effects. These effects can be physical and psychological, and can include dependency.

You may act differently, feel differently and think differently if you have taken drugs. And you may struggle to control your actions and thoughts. 

You might begin to use drugs without thinking about any harm to your body. You might think drugs won't become a problem because you are only a casual user. The more you take a drug, the more likely you are to build up a tolerance to its effects. This can lead to the need to take larger doses to obtain the effects of the drug. For this reason, evidence suggests that after prolonged use, many drugs can cause dependence. Drug dependence can quickly begin to affect your psychological and physical health, and can also affect your work and social life. 

This policy describes [Company Name]'s procedures for conducting random drug testing of employees in its efforts to maintain a safe and drug-free workplace.

[Company Name] will randomly drug-test employees for compliance with its drug-free workplace policy on a quarterly basis. Random testing means employees will be selected for testing using a computer-based random-number generator. This will result in an equal probability that any employee from the entire group of employees will be tested.

Each quarter, on a day selected by a computer-based random-date generator, the human resources department will pull a random selection of employee names and immediately notify the employees selected for testing. Testing must be completed on the same workday the employee is selected, absent extenuating circumstances such as out-of-town travel. In all circumstances, testing must be completed within 24 hours of selection.

If an employee selected for testing is unavailable for a legitimate reason such as an extended medical absence, human resources will document the circumstances for failure to test.

I agree to the following statement. I think that random drug tests should be carried out on drivers, that’s because if they are taking drugs it can cause accidents and many more people can die. Therefore just for safety, drug tests should be carried out on drivers so that they are completely in their senses. While taking drugs the driver may not be aware that he is supposed to stop on a signal or he might not know when he needs to push the break etc. To ensure safety of the driver and the people on the road, drug tests should be conducted very regularly.
