Neurons process much of the information that we need! Because of this, they have to do a lot of traveling to process all information correctly. They are all made of 3 parts: the dendrites(receive messages), the cell body (accepts and passes on) and the axon (carries away to other neurons).

Between the axon terminal of a sending cell and dendrites of the receiving cell is a narrow space called the synaptic gap. Neurotransmitters are what carry the messages across the synaptic gap!

Neurotransmitters at the synapse attach to receptor molecules on the next neuron. Receptors on receiving neurons respond to incoming neurotransmitter messages. The messages are either excitatory (more likely to be passed along because positive ions flow into the cell ) or inhibitory (less likely to be passed along, negative ions flow in).

Pretty much everything we fell, sense, or do is determined by neurotransmitters and their neuronal activity in the central nervous system (how well they can send/carry a message or how likely a neuron will fire).
