Three main concepts of postmodernism 
1. Intertextuality - The play Hamlet is mentioned once near the  beginning of the novel when Pall Marshall mentions that he watched the play while he was visiting London. Marshall and Lola then go to quote the play's most notorious line "To be or not to be". 
Mentioning Hamlet introduces the idea of identifying parallel sequences of events between Atonement and Hamlet. 

2. Self- reecivity - Atonement follows in the literary tradition of the self reflective novel or novel about its own writing. Within the narrative of Atonement, it is revealed that the novel in the reader's hands is a product of Briony's guilt over having ruined her sister's romance.

3. Unreliable narration- Briony who is still a child, narrates parts of the novel but her narration is questioned for she might not be truthful or honest. Three types of metafiction from the novel
1. Self reflexive - Atonement follows in the literary tradition of the self reflective novel or novel about its own writing. Within the narrative of the novel, it is revealed that the novel is the product of Briony's guilt over having ruined her sister's romance.
2. Beaking the fourth wall- We get the epilogue which acts as a huge betrayal of the reader. We discover that it is actually a novel within a novel, that it's the umpteenth redraft of an account by Briony and is probably entirely fictional. This is where logic starts to tie us in knots. Of course it is fictional but there's an unspoken contract between author and reader that everything in a work of fiction is "true" in that time/ place reserved for fiction. What happens here is the book equivalent of breaking the fourth wall.
3. Experimental- In the novel, McEwan narrates from a variety of points of view in order to create an artificial reality for the reader. But the technique is used much better than in its traditional sense.
