When the storm of grief had spent itself she went away to her room alone. She would have no one follow her." (Paragraph 3). This quote expresses her initial reaction to her husband's death. She responds normally at first, crying over his death.
-"She knew that she would weep again when she saw the kind, tender hands folded in death; the face that had never looked save with love upon her, fixed and gray and dead. But she saw beyond that bitter moment a long procession of years to come that would belong to her absolutely. And she opened and spread her arms out to them in welcome."

It's a coming of age story. We were looking at character to be our vehicle. He isn't actually looking at things as they are and is idealizing everything he does not know. It is a quest for love with an idealized girl who is more so being used to change the character. The character changes by starting off as a very hopeful person, but he learns he can't always get what he wants and experiences anger and disappointment like he's never experienced before making him a more mature young man. The setting is set in Dublin, Ireland. This young girl he fascinates over, is a brown girl who is seen as exotic to him and that's why he's mostly drawn to her, the bazaar is also exotica and he wants both. "Her name sprang to my lips at moments in strange prayers and praises which I myself did not understand." "Gazing up into the darkness...eyes burned with anguish and anger."
"At last she spoke to me."
