Katniss Everdeen is more than just self-reliant. She has "trust [in herself]," "she takes[herself] for the better," and she's independent. Katniss doesn't rely on society or the other people in the "game" for the answers she needs, and most importantly, she relies on nature and her own mind for her well-being.

Song: "Walk Don't Walk" by Prince

This song contributes to the theme of freedom and individuality. Emerson believes in not following societal expectations, and thinks everyone should take their own route when it comes to making decisions. He holds the opinion that society has a "conspiracy against the manhood of every one of its members". Prince, on the other hand, runs parallel to Emerson's views on society and self-reliance. Prince says go against the view of society. He says "Walk on their side of the street / Don’t walk where it feels the best.” Emerson states "is a joint-stock company in which the members agree for the better securing of his bread to each shareholder... Self-reliance is its aversion. It loves not realities and creators, but names and customs."

Misunderstood, but great person: Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

The overall impact of MLK is extraordinary. He advocated to be equal, to come together as one, and to have the rights any person should have. In his time, MLK spoke up for those who didn't have voices, or felt that they couldn't. By the whites, he was misunderstood. They couldn't understand oppression and racism. Whites were on top, the most valued. Colored, didn't get or understand this luxury. Not only was MLK misunderstood, every colored person he advocated for was.

Chris McCandless:

Chris McCandless was more self-reliant than anyone these days. He went on a mission, by himself, with limited things that include rice, a backpack, and a compass. He made his own food, and went on a hunt for shelter. Chris was moved by nature, and made it his priority for everyone to see the true value in it. He proved to be the definition of independent and self-reliance. He didn't ask anyone for help, and worked for his own goals. Chris never followed the societal "norms" and expectations.
