Communicates: ELA, social studies, and world language assignments focus on communication (writing, presenting, speaking, discussing, video, listening). The struggle is focusing on listening thoroughly (for the purpose of understanding) first before speaking/sharing.

Creates: In education class, Students going to other schools to implement created lesson plans. In P&C, students will have choice in terms of what they create to show competency in tech apps. Across classrooms, students create using devices regularly and is readily embedded. The innovative showcase and fine arts classes show off the work students have created. The next step is creating structures to reward risk taking.

Advocacy and empathy: In ELA, social studies, and world language classes, analyzing different perspectives is a regular practice. The next step is recognizing the special supports students might need versus what an individual classroom can provide. Pd for staff on inclusivity.

Critical thinking and problem solving: In the humanities, the framing and content delivery has shifted to analyzing perspectives and problems. The next step is to have students solve problems based in reality - have we managed students’ lives so much that they are unable to live on their own?

Initiative & Self Drive: Blended learning, conversations with students on goal setting, etc. This is an area of growth, but we see opportunities in terms of both instruction and in terms of executive functioning.

Collaborates: Incubator, BHS-TV, and culinary arts teams of students working on one product/solution. Rotating roles for students to complete on collaborative projects. Our digital tools now make collaborating very intuitive. Students naturally do this outside of the school (study groups, friend groups, etc) but may need more structure when doing this in formal classroom environments. The next step may be helping students navigate interpersonal relationships when collaborating or ensuring students have a shared purpose for collaborating.
