I want to promote the craftwork of my region by creating dailywear clothing combined with aesthetic characteristics that come from traditional costumes, the typical ceramic of this area, renewed hats used by peasants in old days, etc. I also want to actively contribute to reduce the environmental impact of the textile industry by using recycled, organic and ecological materials that can be recycled or biodegraded. All of these actions would help to decrease waste and create new clothes with sustainable and durable materials. Another important contribution to reducing waste, is that all garments that were not sold would be leased.

I would like to create durable clothes with a great personality given by regional craftwork and with great environmental value. All the products would carry a label with information (QR, link) on the origin and sustainability of the materials to raise awareness about environmental protection and, information about the region where they were made, to show how unique they are.

This business creates:

- Environmental and social value because the clothes are made with sustainable materials that already accomplish social and environmental values. Local supply chain that helps reducing pollution and it is easier to control to secure workers rights. Create an association of artisans to collaborate and support each other to do things as well as possible and that is something beneficial for everyone

- Educational value because when the customers buy a garment, they also get information about how it was manufactured and where the raw materials where obtained. In addition I will develop a blog that will explain how to take care of clothes, how to modify your garment if you want a change (upcycling) and conduct training workshops.

- Emotional value because the clothes are made in collaboration with artisan of the region which will generate special value for the people of this region, who are attached to the regional and tradictional symbols and also, for foreigners who appreciate the crafts and history because these garments are unique pieces. The design will be timeless but combined with different elements, fabrics or prints that people would love and will can be used for a long time.

It is a circular business model because one of the objectives is to close material streams and extend the use phase of these streams by using recycled, biodegradable materials, etc. In addition, the customer can rent clothes that were not sold in previous seasons, so there is a reduction in waste.

It is a community-based model too, because it helps to promote and develope the regional crafts through the collaboration with artisans.

External test

I did the external test interviewing more than 10 people who were family and friends aged 29-67 years who had different occupations and studies, including retired people. This survey helped me open my mind to different possibilities and other ways to improve my project.

None of them knows of a business that combines fashion, tradition along with a leasing section. Some of them are aware of some brands that are inspired by their regions to produce accessories or different prints for clothing, some of them with natural materials and processes. Others know of business that rent clothes, but it is party clothes to go to special events, such as a wedding. Everyone agree that the development of this business should be legal as long as it complies with all the legal requirements established in the laws and regulations that apply. They also agree that my business is oriented through a fashion circular economic model, because it focuses on reducing waste through several channels by using durable and natural materials that are recyclable or biodegradable and by leasing the clothing that wasn’t sold, and thus closing the loop.

The pros are to produce a less negative impact on the environment by reducing waste and pollution, promoting local culture and thus helping the economic development of that area, the educational part by providing information to customers to raise awareness about the protection of the environment and traditions by giving value to handicrafts, social because there is control over how all the garments are produced respecting the rights of workers and giving them fair working conditions. The cons are that it is targeted to a specific public, the products will be expensive and not everyone will have access to them, some people are reluctant to rent daily wear clothes and there could also be a misuse of the rental service by some customers, the need for a strong advertising campaign and knowing what the possibilities are for garments that are not sold or leased.

The feedback leads me to further develop some aspects such as the educational through the creation of blogs that help people to upcycle their clothes or training workshops on the culture in which my products are inspired, the promotional aspect through the participation in cultural fairs, to develop an association of artisans to collaborate and share opinions, techniques and different ways to improve the business.

Impacts

This project will produce less negative impact on the environment because the production methods will be sustainable and respect the environment. In addition, renewable energy sources will be used. The materials will be recyclable or biodegradable so that no waste will be generated, since they will either be reused or composted. Pollution will also be low in part due to local production or as close as possible, so transport will not have a big impact and garment treatments, being mainly natural, will not be a concern in relation to the environment either. The rental section of the physical or online store will allow you not to waste any of the garments and give them a use even if they have not been sold, so that the waste will be reduced. All of these actions taken together will significantly reduce the carbon footprint of all garments produced.
I consider that educationally it will have an impact, since totally transparent information of the entire production process will be provided in different ways, on the garment labels with a short explanatory text and with QR codes or links so you can find out more about the garment, information on the website, informative blogs, workshops, etc.
From the social point of view, this project is focused on respect and equality, so the rights of all workers will be respected and training actions will be carried out to enhance their skills and create motivation and desire to improve. It will also help promote and publicize Galician culture and the economic development of the area.

Great social and emotional values are created by promoting local culture, so that people from the area who are already rooted to it, give it special importance. For outsiders all the information that will be provided about how the work is carried out, the history behind each garment and each craftsman will make them also appreciate and value this culture and feel that these garments are unique. In this way, everyone who acquires one of the garments will be because it really is something that they like as much for the aesthetics as for the history that goes with it. This will make it very interesting to take care of and protect the garment so that it lasts for many years, which translates into protection for the environment too. Thanks to all the training and information provided from the brand, this care of the garment is something that consumers themselves can carry out. So there are also great educational and environmental values in this project.
