They are protesting to defend the Missouri river. The government is trying to build a pipeline to transport over half a million barrels of oil below the river. They had decided to start doing research in areas that made up 1/3 of the population of that city. This had then caused the water to become contaminated. The water warriors fought for the safety of their water for their's and future generations. Now, TransCanada has obtained a court injunction that grants them access to this territory. They want to begin construction of a Costal Gasoline Pipeline that would transport fracked gas to the pacific coast. In response, the Gidimt'en clan set up a checkpoint to control access to their territory.
