phrenology, racist/misogynist/abelist science, classification and overview.

I found that the Wellcome Collection has many items that relate to the history of mental and physical illness. Particularly, I found a few objects on Phrenology that I found interesting, especially in connection to the ideas in the brief about museums' history of colonisation, racism, and imperialism that affect how we display and collect objects now. The objects in this section reflect Western medicine's racist and eugenic histories, particularly through the practice of Phrenology in the 19th century, and how this practice was used for racist, sexist, and ableist ends.

As we think about changing attitudes about sexual health throughout recent history, it is important to think about how sexual health is talked about today, and maybe include that it still has a long way to go. Heteronormativity is a problem that LGBTQ and gender non-conforming people face in medical settings. Sex is talked about in terms of penetration between a male-at-birth person and a female-at-birth person with little nuance. For those who are sexually active outside of the hetero binary, there is little information offered that is relevant to them. This is a problem because these people may be at risk of complications that they are unaware of, or they can feel left without proper care when seeking medical advice.

This advert aired in Scotland and focused on the stigmas and false information that persist, even after being debunked, since the height of the AIDS epidemic in the 1980s. Now that medical advancements have been made, the focus of sexual health marketing has shifted from being alarmist about spreading the disease to being informative about the truths about HIV.

This organization produced a lot of the objects that we were interested in using, based on their tone of voice, visually unique approach, and in-group language and imagery that appealed to the gay community. They formed because they did not feel that the communication from government and official health organisation's was sufficient to reach and influence gay men's choices when it came to sexual health. Their approach uses both comedy and community knowledge to market safe sex to the gay community. For their contributions to sexual health marketing, we thought it would be important to include an organisation like this in our exhibition.

Our audience is the University of Leeds students. This provides us with some parameters already. For example, people may have specialised knowledge about the topic we are covering (maybe health sciences and/or social sciences students). On the other hand, many students at the University are between 18-22 years old and may not have a clear picture of what the height of the AIDS pandemic was like, how people managed, grieved, and forged resilience. This may be a new take on familiar material, or an introduction to a topic.

We need to be mindful of this, as well as of the conventions that shape how we will communicate with our audience. We will adhere to the Ekarv conventions (also in this section) in regards to our object descriptions, introductory and section texts.
