In the book, Ishmael Beah experiences both an external and internal conflict when he comes into contact with the coconut tree. Ishmael faced the external conflict of figuring out how to climb the coconut tree and gather up the energy, in order to reach the fruits. Ishmael did not know how to climb a tall coconut tree, but that was the only food/drink available to him, which also relates to the setting. Ishmael’s internal conflict was starvation, where he was forced to do any means necessary to obtain food/water. He eventually climbs the tree without even realizing what he was doing. He plucked off the coconuts and ate them while relaxing on a hammock. Later on, he thought he would have the energy to climb the tree again, but it was impossible.

The old man came to the village of Mattru Jong in fear of the rebels while searching for his family. The RUF forcefully interrogated him while at gunpoint with all of the children they gathered watched. Ishmael, watching in fear, had no idea what to do except tremble in fear. After a few minutes of antagonizing the man, the RUF shot a bullet, missing the old mans head. The soldiers laughed in amusement while the man was in awe that he was still alive. Ishmael was deeply affected by this, thinking he just witnessed yet another man, after hearing his story, be killed at gunpoint. Only to find out, the rebels continue the torture of the man by not even shooting him at all. The villagers (including Ishmael) were all very traumatized while being held at gunpoint while all of this happened right in front of them. The them of losing innocence is really shown through Ishmael and all of these villagers

Though Beah was a good and pure person, he still had to do something "impure" in order to survive. This is showing how he has internal conflict on whether to survive or do something impure. Afterwords, he has many regrets and feels apologetic for what he has done.

It happened around 8:oo p.m. which is the time for the last pray of the day. The rebels walked into the village and the Imam was standing up in front of everyone to pray and once he started to sura everyone got quiet. Most of the people who saw the rebels left the mosque but some of them tried to tell Imam but nothing changed. When the rebels captured him and demanded to learn where the people were hiding in, the Imam did not tell them. Then they bound his hands and feet with wire and set his body to a fire and he died and one of the worse part is some of the people saw this happening. Also Imam didn't gave them what they want even though he knew he was going to die. So basically What the rebels did shows the religious attack and racism as well.

An old man unexpectedly walked into the village of Mattru Jong while being under control of the rebels. After being taken by the rebels at gunpoint he innocently explained he was just looking for his family. The rebels continued to interrogate him while teasing and pushing him around. The torment then ends when one rebel fires a shot point blank rage right next to the old man's head in front of ishmael and the rest of the captive villagers. This incident is another example on how each day of this war continues to take from Ishmael's innocences. Witnessing the rebels direspect and mentally torture the old man, someone who as an elder had much respect, takes on the set of life principles he thought were proper and right only to have those exact principles be thrown away by the rebels.

When the rebels see the old man crossing the bridge, they are far less than friendly when they greet him. They abuse him, mock him, and force him to answer questions. This brutality toward this elderly man attributes to the horror and obscenity that has taken over Sierra Leone. Before the war, elders were respected and treated with kindness and now the loving atmosphere of that culture is gone.

The old man is unfortunately being interrogated by RUF. They threaten, antagonize, and bully the old man. The old man stands desperate and afraid, as Ishmael Beah's recalls a time when young boys were required to respect their elders and had to have good behavior. It's ironic how the tables have turned now, and the kids are doing the complete opposite. Then RUF shoots towards the old man, scaring him and making him believe that he was about to die, until he realized that he could still see and hear. RUF had found pleasure in tormenting the old man. During this Ishmael was trembling almost as much as the old man, and when he thought he had been shot- Ishmael dropped to his knees and had an extremely rapid heartbeat. He felt for the man and shook in fear for him. This shows an example of how Ishmaels innocence was being taken away and how the harsh cruelness of the war truly started to set in.

Ishmael's time in the forest

Ishmael’s time in the forest symbolizes his growth as an individual by his will to survive and his development of inner strength. He develops his will to survive by remembering his father’s quote of “ If you are alive, there is hope for a better day and something good to happen . If there is nothing good left in the destiny of a person ,he or she will die. “ This memory of his father shows significance throughout the entire book , because he embraces that memory wherever he goes, through his attitude towards life. For example, later on in the book, when the bad fisherman takes his sneakers away, he doesn’t give up . He knows he has to keep going because he carries his father’s words and hope with him. Also, he develops inner strength because in the forest he was truly alone. There was nobody there and every conflict, whether internal , like deciding whether to keep going, or external like the pigs, he has to deal with on his own. He had nobody there to help him decide , or support him. Going through conflicts and experiences makes one a stronger person.
