Cultural Relativism: Where do we draw the line?

We read an article about Cultural Relativism and we shared our ideas in a forum, answering the question "Where do we draw the line?"
We talked about when is it ok to say "This is not better, not worse, just different", and when we think a custom, tradition or practice shouldn't be accepted by other cultures.

After talking, participating with our subjective opinion, and responding to the comments of our classmates, we reached two points in common, which used to be repeated in most definitions.
The first: When we think about "rights" we consider only people, not other beings. So, there another question arises: what happens with killing animals for food?
The second: The concept of "consent". It's not the same if a Muslim woman chooses to wear a burka or if the law of that country forces her to wear it. We also relate this to our society and its strict beauty standards.

I think this task helped us to understand the subjectivity of cultural relativism, and it was the first approach towards the perspective on which we later worked on the subject.

This work consisted of two instances, one of written production and one of oral exposition, in which we worked in groups, on a language of choice.
The groups finally decided to represent: German, French, Portuguese, Chinese, Italian and Romaní.
Personally, I was in the first of the groups mentioned, and this experience taught me a lot about German culture, through the study of its official language.
In addition, through the oral presentations, knowledge was multiplied and shared among all members of the class, which seemed to me an enriching dynamic.

This project consisted of cultural exchange through the PenPal Schools platform. We participate in two forums, of different but related topics that we worked on class: "World News" and "Fake News", where we share our ideas with students from all over the world.
I really liked this proposal, it was so innovative, I had never done something like that!
I would have liked to speak with more students, but, although, in my case, that exchange didn't take place, I found very interesting to read and comment their contributions in the forums.
Always from respect, and through a cultural relativism vision.

By playing ten short videos, one minute each, we went through the history of the English language. From its origins to its global expansion as a global language, studied in all countries.
This task was interesting to me since, perhaps, I think that we don't usually ask ourselves why we study English. I have been in an academy for the last ten years, and I had never questioned why it is that we learn this language and not another.

Algunos objetivos del espacio curricular en práctica:

Desarrollar la habilidad de cuestionar preconceptos culturales.

Reconocer y evaluar críticamente valores culturales explícitos e implícitos en documentos y textos discursivos varios.

This was without a doubt my favorite part of the year, even though I'm very shy when speaking (even in spanish haha), I was able to share my ideas within the group in preparation for the discussions.
The discussion points were:

Should all children learn Portuguese at schools?

All public documents and institutions should provide information in Spanish and native languages as well?

Should Halloween be celebrated in Argentina?

I think it was a very enriching exercise, since inevitably sometimes you have to defend an opinion contrary to yours (for example, in the second, I had to be against), and this forces you to position yourself in someone else's shoes, and in their way of seeing the world.
