Dear Dixie
From what I've seen your dad is nothing but trouble. Your mom has warned you for the good. She doesn't want anything bad to happen to you. She cares for your well being and what's good for you. When your dad arrived he seems to want nothing to do with Gem. That one thing I hated to see. How can someone write to one daughter but not the other? He's trying to pull you into something that you won't be able to pull yourself out of.

(Zarr 12)
I don't know why this word is important
Slathered- spread or smear (a substance) thickly or liberally.
"It was perfect, as if all of Napoleons craving for Dixie had been slathered onto the sandwich." (Zarr 14)
It just another word that's in the book. I don't know why its important.

1. The genre of the book is nonfiction
2. It's nonfiction because everything in it can actually happen. A mother can start getting addicted to drugs and drink. A father can be kicked out and out of their kids lives.
3. "The time mom kicked dad out for good, uncle Ivan, moms little brother, came to Seattle to help make sure it happened." (Zarr 48)
