Pretty much every night, most animals dream. Sometimes when you dream, your body moves accordingly to the dream. This is how sleepwalking occurs. However, this cannot occur in REM sleep (see REM Sleep for details). Some dreams that you have may be wishes you have in real life, like getting a good grade.

Along with regular sleep, there’s also REM and NREM sleep. REM sleep means rapid eye movement sleep, and NREM sleep means non-rapid eye movement sleep. You have your most detailed dreams in REM sleep. NREM sleep is just your regular sleep. Although, NREM sleep has three stages, while REM has one.

Scientists have found out a lot about dreams, but we still have a huge amount of things to discover. Scientists have made a few tests to see what we're dreaming about. Two of the older tests are electroencephalography (EEG) and magnetoencephalography (MEG). These methods are terrible at looking at your dreams, so scientists have made a few newer ones. An example is functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). With these new methods, scientists are starting to get more information about why and how we dream.

Nightmares can be caused by many things, including medications, stress, illness, trauma, and emotions. If you have more nightmares than others, you may be more emotional and trusting than others. Nightmares can be remembered better than regular dreams.
