The Magic School Text Leveler is an AI tool for teachers that allows them to submit documents or type (or speak) into the text box anything that they want to heighten or lower the reading levels of. The options range from anywhere between pre-k levels to university levels and beyond.

The original article I used, aimed toward 2nd graders, was rewritten by Magic School AI to be aimed at Kindergarteners. The rewritten article contains sentence structures that are easier to understand than the original, as well as lower-level vocabulary. All of the information provided in the original article is still available in the lowered-level article, but is more accessible to a younger audience.

Google Docs Voice Typing

Voice typing is a tool offered on Google Docs that allows anyone using the application to simply speak their words and have them scribed onto the Google Doc. You can find it under the "tools" section of the doc. You also have to speak your punctuation and any line breaks that you want in the text.

This was my first time using voice typing and I'm surprised at how accurately it picked up my words. I can see how this would be super useful to a lot of students, like younger students and English learners. It was kind of difficult to remember to dictate all of my punctuation, but that seems like something one could get used to pretty easily. If writing/typing is not a student's strong suit, this would be a great option for a student to use if they would feel better speaking what they want to convey!

Google Translate

Google Translate is an online language translation service. It is offered on the browser and in app form. Google Translate offers many languages to choose from. You can type what you want to translate or you can upload a document to be translated.

When I submitted this article into Google Translate, I was surprised at how quickly the whole document was translated into Spanish. This tool would be super helpful in classrooms that have students learning English. The teacher can use Google Translate to create Spanish (or any other language) documents for the students and the students can translate when they feel they need to. One thing that I wonder about is how natural or accurate the translation is, though. I remember in my high school Spanish classes, we were strongly encouraged to stay away from Google Translate not only because that would be cheating on the assignment, but because the translations didn't always make sense or sound natural enough. That is something I would be cautious of when using it in the classroom.

I wonder why the titled translated differently and what it says compared to the uploaded translation?

Magic School Choice Board

The Magic School Choice Board is an AI tool that allows teachers to input a standard, learning goal, objective, or topic into the application and receive a list of activities for students to choose from that align with the standard or goal of the lesson.

The standard I used was "Standard 1: Ecological, Social, and Economic Systems Students develop knowledge of the interconnections and interdependency of ecological, social, and economic systems. They demonstrate understanding of how the health of these systems determines the sustainability of natural and human communities at local, regional, national, tribal, and global levels." Upon first glance this seemed like a standard that would be difficult to plan a lesson on with lower elementary students, but I was pleasantly surprised with what the AI came up with. As an Environmental Studies major, however, I would alter these activities in some way so that students are thinking more about what the standard is addressing. For example, "Take a walk outside and see how many plants and animals you can find in your area" sounds fun, but I would definitely add something else to the activity in order for it to more closely align with the standard.

With that being said, I think this is an awesome tool to help teachers think of activities/assignments that they can choose from that all align with a topic or goal in some way.

Epic "Read to Me"

The Epic "Read to Me" function enables students to choose from an array of books to have read to them, page by page. When listening/reading along to a book, students can click on any word in the book and see its definition. The student can also change the speed of the voice and zoom in on the book page. The Epic website also offers other options to students like educational videos, audiobooks, comic books, and readings organized by Lexile score.

I read The Mice and the Travel Machine and enjoyed my experience. One of the things I noticed right away was that the voice reading to me sounded very natural, like a real person! I appreciate that aspect of it because it can be really distracting to have text being read to you in a computer-generated voice. I also really loved that you could click on any word in the story and see its definition. I could see this being a hit with students for sure. One of the things I am wondering about is if there is at least a Spanish option for the voice/texts.

The Pebble Go website allows students to read and listen to articles on a number of topics. You can begin by choosing from animals, biographies, health, science, or social studies. Once you choose your subject you can then choose from a number of articles on that subject to have read to you.

I chose from the health subject and listened to an article about feeling sad. All you have to do is click on the play button to have the text read aloud to you. Each page also has an image to accompany it and a selection of a video or a related worksheet underneath the article. I liked the articles that they had to choose from because they all seemed like an appropriate level for lower elementary students. There is a lot to choose from, but the articles are short. I could see this being accessible to younger students who aren't super proficient in reading, yet. I also appreciated that there was a Spanish version available. However, there doesn't seem to be any type of vocabulary highlighting/dictionary which is kind of a bummer. Just because the student may struggle to read a whole article by themselves doesn't mean that they can't benefit from learning new words!
