In the article 'Collapse', Diamond(2005) mentions environmental problems in four categories and what people can do about them. The author claims the solution is to be aware of the mistakes that happened in past and learn from them. In the first category<del>ie</del> , the author demonstrates that people are destroying the natural habitats by converting them in to human-made habitats. Secondly the author states the importance of reserves . People need to be thrifty while using fossil fuels because in the future the reserves will be expensive, dirtier and hard to reach. Third one is about the toxic chemicals which threaten our health and <del>effects</del> causes many diseases. Fourth one and last one, he draws the attention on the growing population on earth. More people requires more resources. While this rapid consumption is happening there came off a new problem, jealousy between first world countries and third world countries for the life standards they have. Despite <del>through</del> all these problems, the writer believes that they are soluble problems. Since people can get lessons from the mistakes, there is hope for the future.

Dear all,
A well-organized summary.

Best,
MET

In the article "Collapse" <del>, </del>Diamond (2005) states that there are many environmental problems in the earth, and society can deal with <del>this</del> these problems (state the solution briefly). The author explains that people are destroying their habitats for new cities, villages, . Therefore, people lose their natural resources day by day. Following this, he mentions that people are consuming available natural non-renewable resources. <del>Either they lose all of existing them or t</del>hey are about lose existing resources and new reserves can require big costs for both nature and money. Then, he says that toxic chemicals which are unnatural like detergents and plastics have big impacts on nature where people live. This situation creates a toxic cycle with affects on soil and water. Thus, go into our bodies foods and our skin absorb them. In addition, he highlights that population is growing, and more people means more food and demand for limited resources. He claims that third world people have tendency to adopt consumption habits of first world countries due to media, movies.

Dear all,
You have many important point, but you need to state the write's suggestion clear in the main argument clear and restate it in the conclusion too. In addition, harsh<del>ly</del> usage of natural energy resources decrease quality and quantity of them which means future generations will have dirtier and more expensive resources that will have more environmental impact.

Summary of ‘Collapse’ by Jared Diamond (2005)

In the article, ‘Collapse” Diamond (2005) lists environmental problems that the humankind is presently suffering by dividing them into four categories. In the first category, he refers to the destruction or loss of natural resources due to human activities such as turning natural habitats to cities, villages, farmlands, roads and so on. Diamond (2005) then draws the readers’ attention to the reserves left for energy. His main concern at this point is that there will still be oil and coal in the future but taking these out to the surface will be much costly, time-consuming and less qualified. The third category he mentions is the harmful and toxic chemicals as well as unnatural animal species and the emission of gases into the atmosphere. Diamond underlines the threat that both humans and the earth are facing such as insecticides, pesticides and herbicides we use to get better crops and other chemicals used in the industry to make our lives easier, faster and more economical but at the same time, causing many illnesses and millions of death every year. He also highlights the harmful gases released into the atmosphere due to human activities such as carbon dioxide from the cars which causes global warming. The last but not least another significant problem is the population growth. He accepts that population is growing and we need to provide more food, energy, water and other resources for them. However, his main concern is not the population but the effect of human beings on the environment due to the uneven distribution of wealth and income. The gap between the First World countries and the Third is becoming wider and wider, which inevitably causes the poor people to be jealous and even enemy of the people from those nations. Despite all these hardships and threats the world and humanity face presently, Diamond (2005) believes that they are soluble and hopes the future will be better due to the interconnectedness through which people living in the remote corners of the world can be informed about any event happening in some other places of the planet and learn much faster than our ancestors did in the past and learn from our ancestors’ mistakes.
