Breeding in the dairy industry has evolved in many ways but the choice of the breeding method depends on the operation. Smaller subsidence farms may prefer one way whereas large commercial dairies may require a different breeding method in order to be profitable. Cows raised primarily for showing may also require a different method of breeding.

Natural breeding is just as it sounds - natural. This is the traditional way of breeding where animals are allowed to breed as they would in the wild. This method has a low labor input because all that is required is for the bull to be released into the pasture with the heifers. However, it doesn't allow for much selection and can be a liability to keep the bulls on the property.

Embryo transfer is the most popular breeding method in the dairy industry because it allows for selection with the sire as well as being relatively simple to do if trained. The semen that is used can also be frozen for a while and used for an extended period of time. Training is required to perform embryo transfer but it can be done easily.

Embryo transfer is a great technology as it allows for a superior animal to continue to be propagated even if she is not in the condition to give birth. However, it is not commonly used as it is extremely expensive and requires a large amount of specific equipment.

Management is key in breeding. It is important to consider desired outcomes, for example, breeding so that you have a continuous stream of new heifers. Background knowledge in a dairy manager is required so that they are able to choose the best matches when breeding or deciding that the best decision is to turn a bull loose with the herd. Whatever the decisions are that need to be made, an intelligent manager is essential.
