In 1960 Moynaq, the fishing town in the soviet union, was surrounded by the Aral sea. But if you visit Moynaq today It will look completely different. The once thriving town of Moynaq is now surrounded by dirt and dust. The shoreline has departed and not by a little bit, the water's edge is about 90 miles from Moynaq. Sadly Moynaq is suffering from needing more water than they have available. This area also suffers from environmental damage because of the little water.

cottin is a main income crop for farmers. But without water it can not grow. This has became a major problem in Central Asia. How can this be fixed? At first the government provided water for cotton farmers. This worked well for a while. The shrinking sea was affecting the region's climate. Without the sea the summers have became hotter and the winter have gotten colder. This has decreased the cotton growth from 200 days per year to 170. The dried sea has also left behind salt making some areas too salty to farm.

Up until about 1980 the Aral sea was rich with fish. About 95 million pounds of fish were harvested each year. This industry was supporting about 35,000 workers. Because of the shrinking of the sea the fishing industry has been destroyed. The small amount of water left is extremely salty and undrinkable. About 100 different species of fish are extinct. The lack of water has let many fishers jobless and commercial fishing has competently ended. Of the 40,000 who lived in Moynaq only 3,00 remain.

Part of the declining quality of life is the immense dust storms that make it difficult the breath. The little water left is too salty to drink and the ground water is unsafe to drink due to sewage and toxic chemicals used on farms. Because of this stomach problems and liver disease are common. Another threat to health is the air pollution. Dust storms carry toxic dust chemicals through the air. Poverty is just making the situation worse. With no rain there are no crops. Farmers have to plant less thirsty crops so there is enough water to go around. They also need to build water treatment plants to treat sewage and wastewater. Changes such as these will cost millions of dollars and take many years to work.

The Aral Sea is not the only part of the world facing shrinking seas. Many places in the world simply do not get enough rain to supply all their needs. While other countries are using more than their fair share. But what is the cause of this? How can you possibly run out of water? Well one factor is population density. Some places have too many people living in it so farmers have to grow more crops resulting to more water useage. Some farmers also plant crops that need a lot of water. Areas with day climates and less rainfall experience it the most. To help we reduce water needs. For farmers with rainier climates, This mens growing less thirsty crops. Ad for families this means using less water in everyday living.
