How is oil formed?

They were formed hundreds of million years ago in prehistoric lakes and seas that were full of microscopic organisms called plankton. When the plankton died, they sank to the bottom of the sea or lake. In the water, they didn't decay completely. All of the dead planktons mixed with the mud and made rich organic matter, similar to peat. Over time, pieces of dirt, sand and mud cover the organic matter. More time passed and much more sand covered the organic matter. The heavy weight of the sand compressed the organic matter. As more sand build up over millions of years, the pressure on the organic matter increased-making it even more compact. Over time, the layers of sand formed sedimentary rock above the original layer of organic matter(dead plankton mixed with mud). Pressure from the layers of rock and heat from the Earth(200-300 degrees) gradually broke down the organic matter into oil and gas. Then people gather them under the sea or lake.
