Throughout YKLDP, I have gained insight on the perspectives of the current leaders of different organisations and their respective leadership styles. Besides, I have realized the importance of having an inspiring leader: to motivate their team to continue fighting for their cause, especially during these trying times. I have also learned about tools that can assist me in overcoming future endeavours such as persuasive speech and critical thinking.

I pledge to advocate for sustainable development that encompasses the well-being of the people, regardless of race or religion, and the conservation of the environment. I pledge to actively take part in activities that will help me become a well-informed leader, through any available avenues. I will assist others, in any way I can, to provide guidance in order to help them achieve their fullest potential.

- Continue to educate myself on inequalities in Malaysia and beyond, by reading more around the topic and taking university classes

- Volunteer with NGOs tackling health inequities or health education

YKLDP has helped me to understand how the leaders of tomorrow should act, from learning the theory of different leadership styles to listening to the speakers’ firsthand experiences on how leadership works on the ground. I also learned that it is really important for a leader to have a vision that would benefit the community, particularly by working towards the SDGs. Besides, I realized that giving back to the community through NGOs could actually empower more leaders out there to help those in need and work together toward a more sustainable development for all.

Upon graduating, I wanted to promote financial literacy among low income families through NGOs so that they are equipped with knowledge to gain income sustainably and jump out of the poverty line.

YKLDP has been helpful in opening my eyes to the skills that are necessary of a leader such as public speaking, and critical thinking when addressing challenges, be it in the workforce or while helping people in an NGO.  Most of the course revolved around the SDGs which is a good reminder that we, as a scholar, must always tie back to how we can contribute to the society. It was really useful being able to hear the stories and experiences shared by the speakers that provide an insight into what we, as scholars, might potentially face as we go on with our careers.

I intend to contribute Malaysia’s progress to the sustainable development goals through the field that I am studying - biology. I hope to ensure that we are able to maintain good health and well-being. I will take part in university groups centred around public health. Upon graduation, I hope to use my experience and knowledge from the degree to get involved in improving the public health sector.

Take on more courses in university to dive further into inequality problems that are amass at present. Engage in extracurricular activities and organisations to volunteer for social welfare of  underprivileged communities and help them as best as I can, while gaining more experience to become a better leader.

 

Throughout the YKLDP program, I have learned many different qualities that leaders should have such as public speaking, cross-cultural awareness and problem-solving in corporate settings. There are many points of information that I found useful throughout the course, especially the activity consisting of the bribery which was very difficult for me to digest.

 

2.       My Pledge and Commitment

Upon graduation, I want to contribute towards advancing women’s rights in our country, specifically in Muslim societies. There are many institutionalized practices in Malaysia that I believe are morally wrong such as the legality of marital rape, child marriages and domestic violence. We have a culture that does not support survivors and instead enables abusers to continue perpetrating violence. Aside from this, I also want to contribute towards advancing women’s place in our country politically and economically.

-          Intern at a think tank / research institute to develop data analysis and research skills

-          Continue as a Research Assistant for my Sociology professor to familiarize myself with literature reviews and using software like R and Stata

 

YKLDP was a great latform for me to improve my interpersonal skills and critical thinking skills. I learned ways to craft a powerful speech and vital speech delivery techniques, which are valuable takeaways as I transition into college and the career world. While YKLDP provided me with the necessary soft skill tools to succeed as a leader and a member of the community, it also helped me realize how important mental health is through discussions of topics such as self and psychological resilience. I have also learned about planning sustainable community work from speakers who have first-hand experiences doing on-the-ground work. This part of the program was very fulfilling for me because I love community services, and hearing from the champions of these voluntary initiatives has excited me to do more for the community.

As a student, I would like to contribute to the community by volunteering with NGOs that champion the cause I’m very passionate about—inequality. Upon graduation, I hope to use my public policy and statistics expertise to push for more open government data so more impactful policy analysis/research can be conducted. I believe that good access to microdata allows policymakers to diagnose the severity of a problem, monitor the implementation of a policy, and evaluate the effectiveness of a policy. However, the lack of transparent data in Malaysia today has hampered the policymaking process, and this must change. I hope to advocate for more evidence-based/data-driven policymaking and hopefully give hope to those who have been excluded from national policies due to a lack of reliable and open data. 

- Enroll in classes that focus on delivering social impact to delve deeper into the different avenues I can use to make a difference in my community.

- Take up internships in a think-tank or policy research institute to understand how economic policies are being discussed in a real-world setting.

- Work closely with specific NGOs, especially those that champion the cause of education inequality, to better understand the real issue. This can better equip me with the necessary information to craft more impactful policies as a preparation to be part of the policymaking engine in Malaysia.
