"In the Sea there are Crocodiles" is the title of a book about the journey of an (almost) lifelong refugee. In the book, the young boy travels on a boat from Afghanistan to Italy. The title "In the Sea there are Crocodiles" is a metaphor. This metaphor is in my opinion very well thought out. The reason behind it is because the book is about being a displaced person. And it is common knowledge that crocodiles are not commonly found in salt water (seas, oceans etc.). So as the crocodiles are displaced in the sea, the protagonist of the story is also displaced as he had to flee his country and settle elsewhere where he didn't know the language, the culture or the people. In conclusion, everyone should have a place to call home in which they feel safe because safety isn't a privilege, safety is a human right.

¨Have you seen the stars, Enaiat?¨ ~ Mother (Page 10, sentence 19)

This is what Enaiat´s mother tells Enaiat before going to sleep because Enaiat can´t sleep. His mother is trying to calm him down by distracting his mind of what is to be the future. This sentence reflects that they have very little possessions and that they make do with whatever they have around. The premise of giving Enaiat the challenge of counting the stars is that it´s impossible, but his mother still tells him to do so. The mother is implying that Enaiat can do the impossible, that he can beat everything that is against him. Therefore the quote is a metaphor, a metaphor for everything that is going to be crossing the little boy´s path. Any sort of complication that he will be running into, he can overcome because his mother believes that he can do anything he puts his mind to.

Conflict

The story of Enaiatollah is an example of person vs. society. The structure of the story was made so that the complications keep building up, such as when Enaiat gets in debt with the traffickers that got him to Iran. But not only this, it is also that today´s society has a negative look at refugees as a whole. Refugees are often looked at with quite a bit of antipathy. This is because they are believed to cause trouble in western cultures, which is not true in most cases. But this does mean that non-refugees are not aware of the crisis that is really going on because they think that refugees are a bother. This can be seen in the book by the fact that he uses human traffickers to move him forward or that even as a little boy he is afraid to be seen in public. Enaiatollah is a person fighting with society because he is an illegal immigrant.

What role do country borders play in the way that humans are connected in the story? How do borders connect or divide the people? What are the consequences of this for Enaiatollah?

Borders are a way for a country to show what amount of land it owns, but it also divides people and cultures. Look at western and eastern Europe, it has a clear cut between what countries do belong in what culture and what don´t. The division between western and eastern Europe is mostly to be blamed on the Second World War and its results, the split between east and west Germany. The results of the split live on to this day. Enaiatollah is from Afghanistan where he flees to Italy, although a lot of African refugees flee to Italy it is still quite a culture shock. The borders create a division between cultures and societies which as a result creates the immense difference in cultures for different countries. This is why Enaiatollah feels so weird in new countries.

Qom • In what way has the distribution of natural resources led to global change?

Most countries have a lot of natural resources, such as Norway who has oil. But as most people care about the stuff a country has to offer in the shape of physical goods. But, for example in Qom, there are beautiful Mosques such as the Ahlolbait Mosque.

- Something to which one has recourse in difficulty

- A possibility of relief or recovery

- A means of spending one's leisure time

- An ability to meet and handle a situation ¨Merriam-Webster¨

All of the points above are definitions of the word ¨resources¨. All of these definitions could also be applied to things such as: places of worship. And places of worship are everywhere in the world, every country has religious believes that are spread all over the world. Of course this influenced cultures globally because at first there was only 1 religion, and with time came more advanced and new religions and ideas.

Is there a relationship between the scale, frequency and duration of migration? Nava.

The relationship consists mostly of fear. People have a tendency to move out of a country when they are in fear of what could happen/ what has happened to them. But 9/10 times this does not happen to just one person but to a whole bunch of people. Just like in the book, when Enaiat travels through the mountains with the traffickers, they do this in a group. In addition to this, while walking through the mountains, they encounter other people who tried to pass through the mountains. None of the people they encountered survived the journey but this shows what kind of risks people are willing to take to find safety. Many people don´t go back to their home country they fled because they build a new life for themselves. This means that their migration lasts forever. In the book, Enaiat also seems to be planning to not return to Afghanistan after his journey. Probably because he didn´t know when it will be safe for him to return.
