The clash between the Western Army and the Eastern Army led Tokugawa into victory. The Tokugawa territory of Edo was relinquished to the Emperor in 1867. Shortly after the city received a new name (Tokyo). To this day Tokyo's population is 13.99 million. It is currently declining (-118,412 in the last year).

Gaspar de Portola was the first man to establish a Spanish outpost in this region in 1769. Then in 1781, 44 European, African and Native Americans from Mexico came to the area and established a farming villiage. At this time the settlement was give the name El Pueblo de Nuestra Senora la Reina de los Angeles de Porciuncula (The Town of Our Lady the Queen of the Angels of Porciuncula). Today, the city of LA has a population of 3.849 million. Based on recent data from the US Census Bereau, LA city is actually shrinking. It is estimated that from 2020 to 2021 the population shrank by about 44,000 people. I picked Los Angeles because I grew up just 20 miles north of the city for the first 16 years of my life. A large portion of my extended family lives in Los Angeles city and i visited quite often.

Today the fast-growing city remains a transportation hub, not just for the country but also for the world: Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport is the world's busiest in daily passenger flights. Direct flights around the world have made metro Atlanta easily accessible to the more than 1,000 international businesses that operate here. Atlanta's population is 522,328 as of 2023, growing at a rate of 1.53% (7871) per year. I picked this city because this is my favorite city. I am going to move there as I am transferring to Georgia Tech, so I thought what better place to choose than Atlanta, Georgia!

The decision to found New Orleans also known as Nouvelle-Orleans, the decision was made by John Laws company of the West, which took place in Paris in 1717. The colony's new proprietors saw New Orleans as a "port of deposit," or a way for future trade from upriver in the Mississippi River valley. According to US census records the current population of New Orleans is 376,971, the population is currently growing at the rate of 1.02% annually. I choose this city because one it is my favorite city in the US. I love the atmosphere that New Orleans has, as well as the architecture of the city itself. The moment I saw New Orleans for the first time, I was in love and yes down some of the streets it smells and some places it is not very nice, but it has its own beauty to it. The city of Madrid has almost 3.4 million people and a metropolitan area population of almost 6.7 million. The population of this city has been increasing at a faster pace after the pandemic. Before the year 2020, there was an increase of population of around 10%. Now, there is was an increase of more than 50%. I picked Madrid, Spain because I have actually traveled to Spain during the summer of last year. My older sister married her husband in Valencia, Spain. We only stopped at Madrid for a couple of hours before we had to catch the train to Valencia. Bakersfield's population as of the 2020 census was 403,455, making it the 48th-most populous city in the United States of America and the 9th-most populous city in California.

While during the gold rush in the 1800’s introduced a lot of new residents into the area, the city was not officially founded till 1869 by Thomas Baker. 

The Bakersfield area was once called Kern Island by pioneers who built log cabins in the 1860’s due to the Gold Rush leading them to the bottom of the Kern river. 

The largest Bakersfield racial/ethnic groups are Hispanic (52.0%) followed by White (30.7%) and Asian (7.0%). 

The state population decreased by an estimated 182,083. 

I picked this city because I was just familiar with the name alone, and also I think learning more about cities in CA would be fun.

I like the beaches, nightlife, and weather, reminding me of the perfect summer vacation.

The current population of Istanbul is 15,848,000, and it has steadily increased on average by 1.40% per year since 2019.
I chose Istanbul, Turkey as my city because I am very interested in the history of the city and its rulers dating back to the Holy Roman Empire. In the mid-to-late 1860's it became known as Laramie City, and permanent buildings began to be constructed. In its early years it was known as an important terminal on the transcontinental railroad. 

Today the population of Laramie is 31,659. Since 1990, the population has been mostly stagnant, having grown only very slightly. 

I picked Laramie because my grandmother graduated High School in Casper, Wyoming and I wanted to learn more about the state of Wyoming in general.

Lagos, Nigeria population is around 15,946,000 at a 3.63% increase from 2022. I choose the city Lagos, Nigeria because one of my bestfriends home country just so happens to be Nigeria. Pittsburgh was founded to serve as a vital link between the Atlantic coast and the Midwest and eventually become known as the "Gateway to the West" because of its intersection point of 3 important waterways (Alleghany River, Monongahela River, and Ohio River. The population growth rate of 2022 sits at -0.06% (while still negative, it's been getting significantly better compared to past rates of -0.23%, -0.35, etc.) 

I picked Pittsburgh because it lies in the geographic region called "Appalachian Plateau" and sits on over 16,000 feet of sedimentary rock.
