What did the doctor do well to encourage the patient in her weight loss and health progression? What could have been done better? How do you think you would respond if you were the doctor? [You don't have to answer this one on the padelet - do you have weight bias? Do you judge people based on their size? How might that impact your nursing care? What are you going to do about this?]

What did the doctor do well to encourage the patient in her weight loss and health progression?

Explained to the patient that their weight wasn't solely caused by their lifestyle, thus recognising the beliefs of the patient, rather than ignoring other possibilities and telling them that the solution was weightloss through exercise and a better diet.

Acknowledged that a weight that the person feels best at is a "healthy" weight, rather than one that makes the person feel exhausted due to being too thin or big. Creates a better understand between the patient and doctor which encourages the patient to really work hard on their own health.

What could have been done better?

Instead of immediately assuming the weight issue was due to their lack of physical activity and a sedentary lifestyle, taking other factors into consideration.

Asking the patient what their lifestyle is like before assuming due to their external appearance, thus taking on a person-centred approach rather than a patient-centred approach that is focusing on their weaknesses and not their strengths

Thinking back to the first video, what did the doctor do well to encourage the patient in her weight loss and health progression?

The doctor tried to set goals with the patient for the weight loss and gave them strategies in which they could try to implement to lose the weight. The doctor acknowledge that gaining weight is not just one thing that causes the patient to get to the weight that they were. There was many factor that going into why they are at the weight that they are which they tried to discuss.
What could have been done better?

The doctor probably should set more achievable goals for the patient and that goal should be adjusted based on individual's personality and commitment etc. The weight loss strategies need to be personalised for the patients not just generalised as different strategies work for different people. Also to celebrate the small steps is important so the patient is encourage to keep on using these strategies to achieve their goals.

How do you think you would respond if you were the doctor?

I would probably try and figure out what was happening at home over the months that they were told to lose the weight. I would try and figure out whether or not they were implement the strategies at home through what they say and what people who live with them say. Once I find those reasons I would try and implement different strategies which they could try to implement to keep them accountable.

What did the doctor do well to encourage the patient in her weight loss and health progression?

The doctor did not only look at her weight and assume that her lifestyle and health was bad, but instead looked at her overall health. The doctor would encourage and support the patient to achieve a weight that they are comfortable and to maintain rather than, pushing the patient to achieve a weight that is seen to be "healthy" by medical standards.

What could have been done better?

Other doctors should look at a patient's overall health and lifestyle choices, and their hereditary genes and develop an understanding to why a patient is like this. They should also try to sympathise and consider the patients feeling and situation before giving advise on a patient's health.

How do you think you would respond if you were the doctor?

I would try to develop a deeper understanding of my patient's lifestyle and examine their past medical histories and then determine if they are healthy. I would also speak to the patient and ask them if they had any worries about their health and provide them with information and guidance to achieve their health goals.
