Memory plays an important role in this book because when Jonas was assigned his job he was the Receiver of Memory and that means he keeps all of the memories of the community. When the community doesn’t have memories, they don’t panic, are in pain, or freak out. When they do have memories, like the time Rosemary left and the memories came back to the people, they panicked.

Society can pressure you into doing something that you don’t want to do. Also, your choices can impact society because when Rosemary left, all of the memories the River gave her went back to the people and they were in terror.

Another consequence could be that whatever choice an individual is making, could physically or emotionally harm another person. We are allowed to grow up and live our lives as we please although there are laws put into place. In Jonas’ community, they attempt to make it a utopia although it ends up being a lot like a dystopia by trying to keep things in our society like war and discrimination from happening.

This could impact a community because what happens when someone welcomes someone into the community but this was a wrong choice? This person could harm the people in the community. Someone could do what they THINK is right but it might be wrong, and this could cost them. Someone could get hurt, someone could get in trouble, etc. However, people can also make the right choices and this could impact a community for the right reasons. Jonas made his own choice and decided to grab Gabriel and leave the community. This will impact the society because his memories will just be left in the air and the Giver will have to help everyone experience this pain.

We can also be thought of as a dystopia because we can get hurt and feel hunger and pain like Jonas saw and felt in his memory. In the Giver, they can’t leave the community. As you read through the Giver, you see things that you are thankful you can do like leave the community, take food home, ride cars instead of bikes everywhere, and small things like that. We have more freedoms than Jonas, and that can be good or bad. We see that throughout the novel.

Memory plays a big role in the novel. The whole reason there is a Receiver and a Giver is because there are memories that have been taken away. It makes it to where no one experiences pain (unless they fall down or jam their finger). No one experiences emotional pain. A lack of memory benefits the society in some ways because nobody has to know the pain of hunger, war, and many other things. They can’t see color and they don’t know what snow or what warmth is. If those memories get out, they wouldn’t know what to do and how to handle that pain, that’s why it is taken away from them. I guess the people who made the community are trying to protect them in a way. It allows them to be safe. That's how it affects the community, they are more safe. However, they can't experience all the good in the world.

In the Giver Louis Lowry has societal structure. In the book she limits the freedoms, choices and desires. She does this by trying to make the novel a Utopia so the freedoms, choices, and desire do not get out of hand. One good example of this is a job. They get assigned jobs where they do not have the freedoms to choose, and they do not have desire for a certain job. There are examples of limiting societal structure throughout the novel.

The lack of memories affect the society because people don't have to good memories which could bring them happiness. But, they also don't have the bad ones so, then they don't ever think anything in the world is bad and they would never know the actual truth about all the things that have happened in the past. If only one person has all the memories that is a lot of pressure on them especially if they think the whole society couldn't take all the pressure.

Memory actually plays a pretty big role in the novel because there is a receiver which receives memories, and transfers their memories to others. It’s an honor to have this role, but it's often quite difficult, because there are terrible memories, but there are really good ones. The really good ones end up being terrible because they’re from the past, and the receiver then realises that the past was happy, and people had choices but now they don’t so that makes the receiver sad. The lack of memory makes the society think that the government making all of their decisions is normal, and okay to do, when it's really just wrong. The community doesn't know what real love is, what colors are, etc.

The society in the book, The Giver, has no choice of really anything, almost everything anybody does has some sort of rule to it.

A problem with a society that has choices is that the people have consequences for the decisions that they make. People could make negative choices that hurt society. Personal choices can impact a society in negative and positive ways. For example if somebody makes the choice to do something positive and it inspires many other people to do something positive then choices are beneficial to society. However if somebody makes a negative and harmful choice their decision will reach many people and will be heard which can lead to many other people making negative decisions which can severely hurt society.
In the text it states, “"But now that I can see colors, at least sometimes, I was just thinking: what if we could hold up things that were bright red, or bright yellow, and he could choose? Instead of the Sameness.""He might make wrong choices." "Oh." Jonas was silent for a minute. "Oh, I see what you mean. It wouldn't matter for a new child's toy. But later it does matter, doesn't it? We don't dare to let people make choices of their own." "Not safe?" The Giver suggested. "Definitely not safe," Jonas said with certainty. "What if they were allowed to choose their own mate? And chose wrong? "Or what if," he went on, almost laughing at the absurdity, "they chose their own jobs?" "Frightening, isn't it?" The Giver said. Jonas chuckled. "Very frightening. I can't even imagine it. We really have to protect people from wrong choices." "It's safer." "Yes," Jonas agreed. "Much safer."” (The Giver, chapter 13 pages 98 and 99.) This quote shows how the people in The Giver believe all choices can impact society. They believe choices can have consequences if you pick the wrong one and it can lead to negative effects on you and society.

Some aspects of a utopian society that are present in our community and in The Giver are free education and access to medicine and healthcare. I believe we have no aspects of dystopias that are reflections in the giver. All of the problems in our society today are solved in The Giver however because they solved these problems they have created many more in the process such as very limited freedom of choice and independent thought. Some aspects of a utopian society that are present in our community and in The Giver are free education and access to medicine and healthcare. But I believe we have no similar dystopian characteristics. In the text it states“Two children--one male, one female--to each family unit. It was written very clearly in the rules.” (The Giver chapter 1 page 8.) This quote is an example of a dystopian characteristic in The Giver that demonstrates how we have no problems that The Giver has and The Giver has no problems that we have.

We can hear the author's voice about how social structure has the power to promote or limit, freedom, choice, and desire through the protagonist, Jonas. Jonas mentions many times how because of what the higher ranking people such as the committee members define and decide to limit freedom of choice and desire. Through Jonas the author expresses how she believes that this system is very unfair and should be abolished. In the text it states, “But almost always, the older brothers and sisters had secretly taught the younger ones. Jonas had been thinking already about teaching Lily. There was talk about changing the rule and giving the bicycles at an earlier age. A committee was studying the idea. When something went to a committee for study, the people always joked about it. They said that the committee members would become Elders by the time the rule change was made. Rules were very hard to change. Sometimes, if it was a very important rule--unlike the one governing the age for bicycles--it would have to go, eventually, to The Receiver for a decision.” (The Giver chapter 2 pages 13 and 14.) This quote demonstrates how only certain people have input and can change the laws. This bike law like many others limits the freedom of choice and desire because of the committee members in this social structure that determine rules and laws.

An example of a dystopian aspect that we have in our community is that we have bad. Like this pandemic going on right now, in The Giver there is all good. An utopian aspect would be that we get to choose our spouse, how many kids we want, and our job whereas Jonas’s community doesn’t. Another dystopian aspect in our society is some people don’t get birthday presents or a birthday party on their special day. In Jonas’s community everybody gets something new each year until they are assigned their job and they get to celebrate. The final aspect I am going to talk about is another utopian. In our society we are allowed to know what everything is, where roads lead and what happened in our past. The Giver is a book about a community who doesn’t get that.

Memory plays a very big role in this novel. It is what the whole novel is based on, it is Jonas’ job. It is what The Giver does for Jonas. Without memory in the novel Jonas would never have made it to Elsewhere, instead he would continue to live in his community thinking that nothing was ever wrong. Memory affects society greatly because, as in the story, before we know what we are missing out on it doesn’t bother us. It is different once we learn what other people have that we don’t. Memory is how we know not to repeat mistakes over again.

Memory plays a huge role in the story, but it doesn’t affect most people in the community. Memory only affects the Receiver of memory because they know/learn all the memories from the past. Having only one person know all the memories from the past is a bad and good thing. It makes it bad because there are so many good memories from the past that they have no idea about. It is also a good thing because it keeps the community away from all the bad memories. It also leaves the receiver of memory with all the terrible memories and he has to deal with them all alone.

When Jonas decided to leave the community all the memories were given to the community which they didn't want them to have so now they have memories of things either good or bad and the bad ones could cause them pain.

What's similar about our utopias and Jonas’s community is that they both want them to not see the bad.

Lois Lowry, in her speech and in the Novel feels about the topic is that she believes that societal structure has the power to promote or limit freedom, choice, and desire. This can be seen when in her Newbery speech, she speaks about how as an 11 year old, she grew up in a small American village within Tokyo. She then goes on to say that she would go out of her small American area in Tokyo, without the consent of her parents. In the Giver we can see this through how the society Jonas lives in, purposely sets all these strict rules to prevent anybody from defecting. That by itself limits freedom, choice, and desire. This can be proven with the following quote, "“Then, after a moment, I realize my mistake. She has said, actually, “Kirei-des’.” She has called me pretty. And I look for her, in the crowd, at least to smile, perhaps to say thank you if I can overcome my shyness enough to speak. But she is gone.” (Lowry, 3)

The role memory plays in this novel is that, it is that all memories are held by one individual, the Receiver of Memory. Thus, memory is sort of a privilege/honor one could have. And with those memories, that person is able to witness terrible things that have happened in the past and then also feel those things. But they are also able to see good things that have happened, or good feelings that one may feel. And through those memories that person literally sees the world differently. Starting with seeing color, then even going on to see the society as it really is. Seeing that the society is keeping memories from the people, only to limit their choices, freedom, and desire. The society does this because it believes that it is keeping the people safe. Lack of memory affects society, due to the fact that it fully takes away the citizen’s ability to make their own decisions, decide what they love and do not like, and even how they live their lives. Lack of memory also allows the people of the community to easily be manipulated and brainwashed. The quote that supports this fact is, "

"Listen to me, Jonas. They can't help it. They know nothing." (Lowry, 153)
