Although these are uncommon, outdoor musical instruments provide kids of all ages and skill levels a remarkably engaging way to learn and create music. In my opinion, it's a creative play that allows kids to learn sound, rhythm, and collaboration in a welcoming and encouraging environment. I hope that more playgrounds will offer these musical opportunities in the future, enabling everyone in the community to enjoy and access musical expression.

Accessible Playgrounds

Seeing my favorite elements of a playground has become more common in the last decade. Accessible playgrounds are designed to include those with disabilities so they can interact with their peers and not be excluded in play. Adding ramp, adaptive swings, soft floors, wider spaced and ground level activities help supports inclusion so children all children have the opportunity to play. As a mother of two daughters with different needs, it's inspiring to see how a simple change in design can bring a community together through inclusion.

This week we learned how important it is to keep children safe in both indoor and outdoor spaces. The pictures of the outdoor play area show toys like cars, blocks, and cooking sets, which give children many ways to play, explore, and use their imagination.

When setting up outdoor play, educators need to make sure the area is safe by checking the ground, removing anything sharp, and making sure the toys are safe to use. At the same time, these kinds of play spaces help children learn new skills, work together, and have fun.

The pictures remind us that a safe classroom is not just indoors—it also includes the outdoor space. As educators, our job is to plan carefully, prevent accidents, and create spaces where children feel free to play, learn, and express themselves safely.

The outdoor play space offers many opportunities for fun and learning, but safety must always come first. Play equipment such as the slide and swings should be firmly secured and regularly checked for damage. Soft surfacing like sand or mulch can reduce injuries from falls. Sun safety is important, so shaded areas, hats, and sunscreen should be encouraged. The water table should always be supervised and emptied after use to avoid hazards. Fencing and clear sightlines help with proper supervision, while regular cleaning of sand and toys keeps the area healthy. Monitoring weather conditions also ensures children can play safely in all seasons.

When designing a playground you want to create a space that is safe, entertaining and accessible to children. The proposed design includes a good balance of swings, slides and climbing facilities to really get the kids moving, and expansive open spaces that are great for a kick-around game of soccer or completely free play, all surrounded by a secure fence, clear signposting and a layer of soft underfoot surface under the equipment. Coming hotfooting off the equipment, there are inviting picnic tables, shady spots and a water fountain that make the whole place feel so welcoming to children and their families.

Well-known features of learning and sustainability, such as solar panels, a walking path and opportunities for people to chat with each other are also part of the design, and put the playground squarely on the side of both physical activity and environmental consciousness.

The playground includes a variety of play equipment such as slides, climbing frames, swings and open grassy areas where children can run, play games, and explore freely. These activities help children stay active, improve their coordination, and build confidence while having fun with friends. The design also includes colorful activity spaces like hopscotch and balance games that encourage movement, creativity, and teamwork. A comfortable seating area is provided for parents and children to relax and socialize. Nearby toilet facilities and clear pathways make the space convenient and easy to use for families. Safety is an important part of the design with soft ground surfaces, open visibility and secure surroundings to help children play safely.

I like the idea of having all of the traditional elements of a play space, as well updated elements that are easily accessible for everyone including those with disabilities or impairments. Such elements would include slides, swings (both original and impairment friendly), ramps and more. Adding natural elements (logs, stumps, sticks, rocks) assists with more imagination and open ended play invitations.

I would start/co-plan with members from around the community, educators and children by creating surveys on what members from the community would like to see at their local outdoor play space. and provide options for surfaces, and elements as well as an area for new ideas.

Having multiple play areas with a variety of surfaces enhances the play space. Such areas would include sand, turf/grass, pavement, and/or shock absorbing "poured in place" rubber.

I love when playgrounds and outdoor play spaces have open-ended materials that helps children use their imaginations. My favourite parts of playing in the playground as a child were the many opportunities to explore and invent stories using the equipment.

Additionally, ensuring that there's enough space for the children to run and play are super important to prevent crowding and injuries. Maintaining safety and inspecting routinely is of the utmost importance.

Also, designing the playground in an inviting and esthetically pleasing way to children will help them be more engaged with their environment.

My favourite elements of a playground likely focus on variety, adventure, and sensory engagement. An example is traditional bucket and nest swings. Slides, the tube or spiral ones are favourites for speed and excitement. nets, dome climbers and monkey bars for developing strength and providing a sense of achievement. Sand pits, water features, trees and mud. Good for open-ended creative play such as building and digging. Play houses, musical panels and sensory gardens are good for enjoying quiet time, creative or tactile exploration. These types of elements provide a mix of active, social and imaginative play experience.

This week we looked at safe indoor and outdoor setups for children.

I chose wood chips because when they are installed properly, they are a very safe and injury-preventative ground covering for children. I also included a water fountain so all children have easy access to water throughout the day. Trees were added to provide shade, cooling areas, and quiet breaks from active play. Finally, I included a multi-age playground so children of different ages and abilities can safely play, explore, and interact together.

I prefer a playground that has an open-ended nature or man-made material for children to explore. I enjoy an area where children of all ages can engage and have fun all at once, rather than thinking or stressing out about different ages. An example where the environment is safe for infants, able to sit them down and crawl in the grass, while toddlers are running around, going on the slide, or building with sand material, or climbing the trees. Therefore, in my opinion, the safety of the area is all that matters because children are smart and creative; they can engage and have fun in any style of outdoor environment. Children love outdoor space than indoor spaces.

For this play space, I really want to focus on natural materials, colours, and open-ended play that let kids lead their own learning. I’d love to see lots of wood, sand, and loose parts like tree stumps, so they can explore and develop their skills. To design a playground, I feel it's important to co-plan with children by observing their interests and checking in with families to gather their input. When designing a playground, I feel as though it's important to have the community be a part of planning, as they will be the ones enjoying the space. I’d also make sure to consult with resource specialists and licensing inspectors to keep everything safe and accessible for everyone. When it comes to the ground, I’d use an approach involving putting playground rubber under the climbers and swings for safety, while keeping the big grassy area and adding smooth pathways so children of all abilities can easily run around and navigate the space. I included basic playground structures like slides, swings, sandboxes and climbers, but I also wanted to include an area for the younger children, tree stumps for risky play, a music area, public washrooms, a recycling area to encourage cleanliness, and a community garden. As a mom with a young child, I find that many parks don't have a section for young children, which makes it very hard for younger children to feel comfortable playing, so my favourite elements of a playground would be those that include areas for younger children.

The outdoor playground I designed focuses on both safety and comfort for children. I used wood chips as the ground surface because, when they are installed correctly, they are very shock absorbent and can help prevent injuries from falls. I also chose age-appropriate climbers and equipment to make sure the playground is safe for children at different developmental stages.

In addition, the playground includes easy access to a water fountain so children can stay hydrated while playing. There is also a shaded area where children can sit, have snacks, and take breaks from the sun. Overall, the playground is designed to create a fun, safe, and comfortable environment for kids.

Lots of different slide and options for the kids to enjoy

A yard is key to a child’s development! I’d want a beautiful fun filled yard for the children to experience many different things! A beautiful wooden sand box with a mud kitchen, full of items from nature, with a beautiful wood chip area around it. A side walk lined with a flower bed will go along the entire perimeter! You can find a beautiful fairy garden hidden within the garden! From there a bike track will be available to allow a safe designated area for bike riding! The climbing unit will be available (with at least 1 educator monitoring it) to bring in more risky play! Underneath the unit will be a rubber court allowing some safe cushion for potential accidents. A large shaded areas will be provided to give children the opportunity to rest and partake in some art activities! The yard will be mostly grass beside the designated areas!

I’d want to work with the parents from the centre to get their desired wants and see what suits needs. From there turning to the community for help will be my go to co-planner!

My favourite aspect of a playground from when I was little was always how inclusive of nature it was! It wasn’t a big climber or slide person. I’d rather swing on a swing set and listen to the birds chirping, bees buzzing and seeing the squirrels running by! I want to be able to use nature to build and explore my senses, more than anything else. The more a playground brings nature in, like trees around, grass around, bird houses available, the more I enjoy my time when at a play ground!
