Cuba recently gained independence from spain whith america’s help which made tensions with spain leading to them being blamed for this event.

3 analysis: This event created a lot of controversy, it heightened tension between the US and spain, making them closer to war although it has been disproven that spain did it, this act led to them being heavily accused of the explosion even though it was a gas leak.

The Annexation of Hawaii was to bring Hawaii in to the US declaring it US territory, signed into law by President William McKinley July 7th, 1898. Right after Hawaiian resistance to separate from Spain in the Spanish-American war, it was seen as an important naval base due to its strategic location in the mid-pacific strengthening the pro-annexation of Hawaii arguments. This annexation of Hawaiian territory led to a naval advantage as it served as refueling and supply point for the US navy, expanding Americas power and territory.

Durning the ‘Philippine War’ a false narrative was created that with the victory of America the Philippines would gain freedom, and become independent. This narrative, however, was false. Instead, the war led to the replacement of the Spain power with an equally powerful force of the United States.

This created dismay within the Philippines, and many of them felt they were betrayed. This betrayal led to the Philippine-American War. In which the Philippines fought for independence of the American power and gathered under the leadership of Emilio Aguinaldo. However, this rebellion/war would result in the Philippines losing and staying under the control of America till the end of World War II.

This would cement the US power for acquiring an international property allowed them to grow substantively in economic. It also led the United States to gain military presence within Asia, which before the war, was seen as impossible. So overall, acquiring the Philippines substantively pushed America into becoming one of the leading global powers.

These rulings also have a distinction of “incorporated” territories destined for statehood and “unincorporated” territories which were not intended for statehood.

Analysis: with these Insular cases it increased power over territories America took, as these cases justified unequal treatment of new inhabitants in these new lands acquired by Americans. The U.S. was widely criticized for perpetuating colonialism and systemic inequality.

Spanish American war, in which the United States intervene to give freedom, and protection to Cuba against Spain. Although this protection came in a price. For Cubas case, it came at the cost of some freedom. This was documented within the Platt amendment.

This amendment created by senator Orville H. Platt, restricted Cuba‘s right to enter treaties, negotiate treaties, in which compromise the United States interest. It also allowed the US to intervene military in Cuban if American economical interests were threatened. Lastly, Cuba was forced to lease land for the United States to hold naval bases and coastal stations.

In essence, this made the US control a lot of Cuba’s sovereignty. It practically made Cuba an international property of the United States. This elevated America’s power due to the United States being able to protect investments and industries created within Cuba. The United States was also able to limit the metaphor and power that was within Cuba therefore safeguarding the land. Lastly, they were able to make military advancements due to them being able to hold naval basis on the island. This once again allowed them to have control of more of the ocean. Which, during this time was essential to being a global power.

A Canal built by the United States, and spans 40 miles (65km) . The Panama Canal has become a staple in international trade.

Due to the Hay-Bunau-Varilla Treaty (1903), the Untied States acquire the rights to a Panama Canal Zone. This canal would be able to shorten intercontinental shipping by thousands of miles.

This permeated American positions as a global power by also making it a Pacific Power. The United States now had gain control of both oceans; which in returned, allowed them to move Navy ships quickly and effectively. Which was needed in a time where Navy power was global power too.

A navy and nurse launched by president Roosevelt, which contain 16 battleships which all were painted white (which is the ‘White Fleet’). The white symbolizes peace, which was the fleets mission. The mission was in response to the growing international tensions, which is why the fleets mission was to cover it 43,000 miles and dock at 20 ports across all six continents. This mission lasted 14 months and sent a clear message of not only peace, but also the strength the United States Navy power was capable of.

This mission had an alternative motive, it was supposed to showcase to the world the United States’ great naval power and acquired within those recent years. During this time naval power was also seen as a sign of global influence. So showcasing this influence and great strength to not only the people around the United States, but globally send a clear message that the United States was now a global power, and could not easily be messed with.
