Johnny is a sponge, soaking up all the suds of hate from his parents. The whole gang is a bunch of greasy pans and Johnny is the sponge who cleans them. His parents take out all of there anger on Johnny, who gets so used by them so only the rough side shows. After Johnny and Ponyboy run away, Johnny becomes a dry, hard, and crusty sponge. No suds of anger go in, only out. After he shows what his insides are like after he saves the kids, he finally becomes his old cleaning self again, but at the same time, he cannot live after he cracked. Then his life was thrown away, like a dry, old sponge. "Fiery huh? Well, that´s the way I like em." He started to put her arm around her, but Johnny reached over and stopped him.
"Leave her alone, Dally."
"huh?" Dally was taken off guard, he stared at johnny in disbelief. Johnny could't say "boo" to a goose. Johnny gulped and got a little pale, but he said, "you heard me. leave her alone." Dallas scowled for a second. If it had been me, or Two-Bit, or Soda or Steve, or anyone but Johnny, Dally would have flattened him without a moment's hesitation. You just didn't tell Dally Winston what to do. One time, in a dime store, a guy told him to move over at the candy counter. Dally had turned around and belted him so hard it knocked a tooth loose. A complete stranger, too. But Johnny was the gang's pet, and Dally just couldn't hit him. He was Dally's pet, too. Dally got up and stalked off, his fists jammed in his pockets and a frown on his face. He didn't come back."

THE UNDERDOG, we think this because at the beginning he isn't part of the story at all but as story progressing he becomes more and more important. We also think he could be the TRAGIC HERO because he went into the burning church to save kids who were trapped in the back. His downfall was he stayed to long to help the final kid and the building fell on top of him.
¨Dally swallowed and reached over to push Johnny's hair back. "Never could keep that hair back... that's what you get for tryin' to help people, you little punk, that's what you get..." (126)

THE HOTSHOT, we think this because he would do bad and rude things to get attention. "Dally hated to do things the legal way. He liked to show that he didn't care whether there was a law or not. " he` went around trying to break laws." (18) "Nobody else was there except two girls who were sitting down front. Dally eyed them coolly, then walked down the aisle and sat right behind them. I had a sick feeling that Dally was up to his usual tricks, and I was right. He started talking, loud enough for the two girls to hear. He started out bad and got worse. Dallas could talk awful dirty if he wanted to and I guess he wanted to then. I felt my ears get hot." He was in charge of him, he made sure he had good grades, and he didn't let him go places on school nights. He had lots of power over pony. Everything he made pony do, and what he did to him had great impact on PonyBoy. "Me and Darry just didn't dig each other. I never could please him.

Two-Bit is THE TRICKSTER, we think this because he is the person who always has a smart mouth and steals a lot of things, especially his prized black-handled, 10 inch long blade switchblade. "We were all four sitting there in silence when suddenly a strong hand came down on Johnny's shoulder and another on mine and a deep voice said, "Okay, greasers, you've had it" I almost jumped out of my skin. It was like having someone leap out from behind I looked fearfully over my shoulder and there was Two-Bit, grinning like a Chessy cat. "Glory, Two-Bit, scare us to death!" He was good at voice imitations and had sounded for all the world like a snarling Soc." (25)

Integral Setting

We thought the setting of the East Side was very important. The setting had to be important because there would have been no conflict because if they were all equal, there would be no reason to fight or there would be no power struggle. The Socs throw keg parties and break windows and the greasers are smokers and hoods. ¨Greasers can't walk alone too much or they'll get jumped, or someone will come by and scream "Greaser!" at them, which doesn't make you feel too hot, if you know what I mean. We get jumped by the Socs. I'm not sure how you spell it, but it's the abbreviation for the Socials, the jet set, the West-side rich kids. It's like the term "greaser," which is used to class all us boys on the East Side" (4).

The conflict in the outsiders is between the Socs and the Greasers. The Greasers live on the east side and are poor, the Socs on the west side are rich. The Socs abuse the fact that they have more money than the Greasers by beating them up, jumping them, and calling them Greasers. This causes tension which makes rumbles and affects characters greatly. We're poorer than the Socs and the middle class. I reckon we're wilder, too. Not like the Socs, who jump greasers and wreck houses and throw beer blasts for kicks, and get editorials in the paper for being a public disgrace one day and an asset to society the next."

BACKSTORY: Dally Winston spent three years in the wild sideI'll get them, don't worry!" I started at a dead run for the church, and the man caught my arm. "I'll get them. You kids stay out!"
of New York, he was arrested at the age of ten. In New York he blew off steam in gang fights. He had been arrested, got drunk, rode in rodeos, lied, cheated, stole, rolled drunks, and jumped small kids. "He had quite a reputation. They have a file on him down at the police station." (10) "he did everything." (11)

Desires and Goals: Dally's desires are to get tons of attention. He loves attention and does bad and rude things for it, his goals are to are to create a reputation for himself, he likes to break laws and create problems. He does whatever he wants and will get anything he wants, no matter how it is done. "The shade of difference that separates a greaser from a hood wasn't present in Dally. He was as wild as the boys in the downtown outfits, like Tim Shepard's gang." (10)

Flaws: Dally does whatever he wants and is very impulsive. This means jail, reports, and cops called. He only likes his opinions and in the personality test, we found he is extremely low on agreeableness. "It was Dally. He phoned from a booth. He's, just robbed a grocery store and the cops are after him. We gotta hide him. He'll be at the lot in a minute." (130)

Personality Test: We did our personality test on Dally. We found he was the entertainer and had low scoring for all categories. He scored only 5% on openness to experience. This means he is traditional, more comfortable in familiar surroundings, and conventional. He was moderately conscientious, and highly ambitious. He is also very low in agreeableness, scoring a whopping 0% and is also very self-confident. He shows this when he tries to pick up Cherry and Marcia, being dirty and just trying to use any way to get them. He also is the one party guest who just trashes everything and does not help you clean up after because he is either passed out or just left.
"Take your feet off my chair and shut your trap." Boy, she was good-looking. I'd seen her before; she was a cheerleader at our school. I'd always thought she was stuck-up. Dally merely looked at her and kept his feet where they were. "Who's gonna make me?" (19)
