Felicitas helped to spearhead and win the monumental lawsuit Mendez v. Westminster - 1944

In 1946 the first US federal court ruled against public school segregation for Mexican Americans —almost a decade before Brown v. Board of Education. 

In 2011, Mendez's daughter Sylvia was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom—the United States’ highest civilian honor—in recognition of her and her parents’ role in the Westminster v. Mendez case and her lifelong dedication to civil rights and education that followed.

She was a writer, collector of folktales and puppeteer.

She believed in welcoming everyone to the library, offering programs and titles in Spanish.

Schomburg researched and raised awareness of the contributions that Afro-Latin and African Americans made to society.

Schomburg wrote about Caribbean and African-American history.  His passion was to collect books, notes, music and artwork from Africa. 

He co-founded the Negro Society for Historical Research, to support scholarly efforts.

The New York Public Library bought Schomburg’s collection and the collection was added to the 135th Street branch in Harlem, N.Y.

Attended school in Barcelona, the city that became home to most of his work.

His style includes patterned brick or stone, bright ceramic tiles and floral or reptilian metalwork.

Gaudi was charged with the construction of the Basilica de la Sagrada Familia. 

Gaudi died while still working on The Sagrada Familia.

The Basilica has a final completion target date of 2026 to mark the 100th anniversary of his passing.

Selena grew up speaking English but was taught to sing in Spanish by her dad.

At the age of 10 Selena became the lead singer in her family’s band.

Selena became the first Tejano artist to take home a Grammy for best Mexican-American Album.

In 1995 Selena worked on her first English album that she hoped would put her on the top of the U.S. pop chart but she didn’t live to see its success.

In 2016, Ocampo was named the National Hispanic Scientist of the Year.

Adriana's research led to the discovery of the Chicxulub impact crater in Mexico, which was created by the 6-mile wide asteroid that crashed into the Earth millions of years ago, leading to the extinction of the dinosaurs.

Celia Cruz grew up in Havana, Cuba, and when Cuba's government forbid her to return from a tour in Mexico, she immigrated to the United States. 

Celia won 8 Grammy Awards and earned 23 Gold Records (meaning that a song or album sold at least a half a million copies!!)

Though fluent in English, Celia always sang in Spanish to honor the language of Cuban music and the roots of salsa. 

A school of music in the Bronc is named after her.
