Brook points out that humans never will have long lasted satisification. They will always want more because it is like an addicition for happiness. The goals that we seek, and the achievements that we get make us feel joy, but that feeling is only temporary. Therefore, instead of being appreciative of what we own personally, we seek for another goal to gain that joy again.

Extrinsic vs. Intrinsic

Brook highlights the crucial aspects that we must reflect in our goals. What is it that already makes us happy? What is it that we really want? Is it a social standard such as getting good grades to impress you family, or is it something more personal. He challenges the audience to think more on how we should manage our wants. Some of our goals is not worth what we already have. For Brook, he mentions, "I make another list of the sources of happiness: my faith, my family, my friendships, the work I am doing is inherently satisfying and meaningful and that serves others" (17). He list more intrinsic goals than extrinsic goals. The intrinsic goals tend to bring more happiness.

Human's assumption that satisifaction only means getting what you want. (Have vs. Wants)

Brook mainly argues that society has this misconception of satisifaction to be based on achievements, awards, and wealth. It is these goals that drive them forward in order to grasp long-lasting happiness.

This is where the problem begins. We can finally achieve all our wants, but at the end we might still want more. Our wants can be based on social status and comparison.

In the text, Brook mentions that "Dopamine is excreted in response to thoughts about buying new things, winning money, acquiring more power or fame, having new sexual partners"(10). This is the natural reason for why people always want more. It is something that lives within us. We just have to learn to manage our desires.

As mentioned before, we have this ideal view that living life with everything we want will lead us to satisifaction. Religion addresses this issue. For example, Thomas Aquinas, a religious priest, argues that, "In the desire for wealth, and for whatsover temporal goods...when we already possess them, we despise them, and seek others" (Brook 11). This ties beyond religion. In the real-world, it is the same exact thing. Humans have what they want, but still want more. Brook points this idea through celebrities, and millionaires who are not satisified despite their luxuries.
