So if we worry that it's difficult to assess these various competencies across LBST classes, I wonder if the portfolio would be a way to do that?

Many first-year students have trouble differentiating between an article in a popular magazine, a scholarly journal article, and anything that is bound is called a "novel."
I don't think that our students are coming to us as freshmen with much experience as reading.
