"Only Child Syndrome"

Bethany Cole begins this novel as a spoiled, isolated, dependent child. She spends the first portion of the novel thinking constantly about herself, only really worrying about her parents because she doesn't want to be left alone. This behavior is more commonly described as "only child syndrome", which is hilariously ironic in Bethany's case. According to recent developmental psychology research, most children, through interaction with peers, learn how to better handle the emotions of others and even be compassionate toward others at around age nine. Unfortunately for Bethany, she's a few years late. This is not anyone's fault, it is simply a result of the overprotective parenting she was raised with. Through the course of the novel, Bethany gradually obtains a sense of understanding toward others and manages to overcome her past.

Sibling Rivalry

As soon as Bethany learns of her sister, she instantly begins comparing herself. Not only does she have an outstanding sister, but she was made in her memory. I enjoyed this concept a great deal, as it put a refreshing twist on the idea of sibling rivalry; which is what I chose to call Bethany's initial thoughts about Elizabeth. Bethany feels the need to go out of her way to separate herself from Elizabeth, like choosing foods she normally would not. I felt quite bad for Bethany, as she struggled to hold onto who she was in the shadow of her sister.

Sense of Self

I have a lot of empathy for Bethany; learning you are a clone would be quite detrimental to a young person's sense of self. Not only did she live twelve years of her life in the dark about it, but now she has to spend the rest of her life contemplating her very existence. I became a bit consumed with the idea of being a clone - Who are you really? Are you yourself or are you a version of another person? I loved this brain teasing twist and the way it altered my definition of a sense of self. Bethany does manage to come to the conclusion of disassociating herself from Elizabeth as she ages, as she feels like Elizabeth cast a shadow over her childhood. (So I highly recommend this story if you want to have a mini existential crisis.)

My voice recording decided to disappear on me! So, here is what I would have said aloud:
(I apologize that you get to miss the sound of my too high-pitched voice.)

The book I chose for my independent novel project was Double Identity by Margaret Peterson Haddix, and I rated this novel a 7/10. I have read other novels by Haddix, so I was a bit of a fan already - But this book totally re-inspired me to get into her work again. This book centers around a young girl called Bethany Cole, a swimmer and bookworm who lives a hermit lifestyle with her parents. I found this to be pretty relatable, so Haddix had me at the start. Bethany's life is pretty ordinary, until one day, her parents up and leave her with a strange relative she never knew she had. I won't spoil the whole plot, but I promise it keeps you interested all the way through. I had to knock this book down a few points, mainly because of Bethany's childish attitudes. Granted, she's twelve, but I found myself very often frustrated by her actions. I also wasn't a fan of the way Haddix wrote out Bethany's thoughts - It felt a little forced to me, personally. I did genuinely enjoy the plot and the concept of Bethany's unique conception. (You'll know what I mean after reading the ending.) I highly recommend this novel, as I feel it is one of Haddix's best.
