The images are all shown with the purpose of creating tension. Ominous/tense sounds are played when showing different points of action, while a sound track is constantly playing to build up the intensity. 

 

The scene is quite colourful thanks to the background, however the colours that stand out the most come from the characters themselves – for example Ramona’s hair. 

 

Construction of content: 

The narrative is very fast paced however I feel it’s quite easy to follow (especially if you’re watching the movie). Information is revealed and revelations are made however not much action occurs beyond that. 

 

The scene is confined to a very small area with only 5 people actually “moving” (towards the end). 

 The scene isn’t one that an audience member can just jump into at any time, they’d need to watch the rest of the movie first. 

 

Codes & Conventions 

The language is very simple and direct, the conversation is very tense and seems to be building to a crescendo.
 The audio works together with the movements of the camera to build the atmosphere, making it tenser. 

Each character has their own style (the film is based on some manga) and so they look a bit more cartoonish than regular characters. The main characters are the ones who stand out the most; Todd, Ramona, Ivy and Scott. 

 

The techniques are quite simple, very quick cuts to the person who’s speaking at the time with a few wipes. With quite a few close ups during the tenser moments. 
 There is also use of visible text to highlight sound effects. 

 

The audience aren’t directly addressed, except for the text shown on screen e.g. the part where Todd says he “doesn’t know the meaning of the word” and on screen it says He really doesn’t. This just feeds into the fact that it’s based on a manga/comics and cuts into the intensity of the scene with some humour.

The way they try and show the audience their product to sell it is by showing lots of high quality images of the product, this will make it more captivating for the audience, it will also look prettier. They use fonts in their text that stand out but also easier to read for the audience. The text has been broken up into different parts, explaining the different things about the product which makes it easy for the potential customer to follow. The way they are trying to sell the product to the audience is by showing the audience all the good new features while getting pictures next to them so the viewer can get a taste of what they look like. 

The images shown throughout the video is meant to add to the narrative of the song. The colour scheme for this video is quite simple with the majority being black, white, red or nude. 

 

I think the content is really only secure as long as people remember who Shia is or the memes.  

 

I think the language used is simple, meaning an audience with a range of ages will be able to understand the narrative, however it’s probably not suitable for children due to the topic. Visually everything contributes to the story being told, the props used by the dancers and the clothes they’re wearing (red robes). The simple colour scheme also keeps the attention on what is happening during the video. The whole story is addressing the audience as it’s a reader, or in this case listen, insert story. It is set out for each individual who listens to it to imagine themselves as the character in the story.

 

The way Apple appeals to this higher end audience is by making everything much easier for them. So the new features include having a full screen of display means that their phones bigger as bits are not taken up by empty space. A bigger screen makes doing anything easier as well. The IPhone X features wireless charging meaning there is no need to have hassle with finding chargers etc. it’s also water and dust resistance which everybody would be happy with as everybody knows or has known someone who has accidentally dropped phone in water and they are sometime unable to get the phone working at all. This means that it will be less likely that this will break it. Plus is the most durable iPhone to date meaning if you drop you phone its less likely to break and less needs for repairs because of this. 

Some new features that users will like is the phone will respond to your tap, voice and even glance. This phone has face recognition and can be used to unlock iPhone. This makes it easier for the user to use their phone and plus even more secure than it has ever been before. So apple have advertised all these things as they know people will buy their product wanting a easier experience!

            There are very few words used in this advertisement, being restricted to the product slogan, which is “This is for the players”. This is accompanied by the vast amounts of imagery derived from games available on the product being spread throughout the advertisement. The sound is almost entirely diegetic, with the sources of sound being visible in shot. The advertisement uses an eye-catching sequence demonstrative of the variety of games available on the platform. The camera moves in a way that could suggest a narrative through a journey, but it is likely that it is more of an appealing set of visuals rather than a story. There is a wide variety of colours shown by the use of VFX and GFX similar to the colours found in the games shown. The only font used is the standard PS4 font at the end which is used to display the product slogan.

 

            There is no real narrative in this advertisement, rather a sequence of demonstrative assets from games available on the PS4. The sequence seems to be from a first-person point of view which could be a reference to how games attempt to immerse you whilst playing. The only caption is the slogan “This is for the players”, which is shown at the end as well as being said some point during the advertisement. There isn’t much long-term appeal to this advertisement, but that isn’t required for a product that will continue to be expanded upon for a decade to come.

 

The language is very minimalistic, being used only a couple of times with only one instance of it being used as a direct way of communicating with the audience. The visuals are heavily reliant on graphical and visual effects being used to show assets from games. The audio is almost entirely diegetic with sources of sound being visible most of the time. The advertisement addresses the audience directly with the use of the motto “This is for the players”, which shows that the target audience are people who have an interest in playing games.

Sum 41 – In Too Deep 

 

Selection of Content: 

The scenes in the video are very bright and not serious, which follows the tone of the song. The only use of words in the video are on the various signs held by the crowd members and the scorecards used by the judges. 

 

Construction of Content: 

The narrative is a parody of a scene from the movie Back to School where the band is competing in a diving competition against stereotypical “jocks”, complete with muscular bodies and speedos. The final dive by the band’s drummer is also a parody of a similar dive done by the main character in Back to School. 

The scene where the guitarist rises out of the water playing a solo was also copied from the Guns N’ Roses video for Estranged. 

This content isn’t very secure since it was part of the pop punk scene from the 90s to early 2000s, although the fact that there are no references to events at the time it won’t become extremely dated. 

 

Codes & Conventions: 

There isn’t much complex or fast cutting between shots but there are a few parts around when the song starts to pick up at the end. The camera work is very simple mostly consisting of static and slow tracking shots. 

It addresses the audience with the camera facing directly at the band and the main singer sings directly into the camera. 

Throughout this scene there is a dark theme with barely any colour besides blue. Which adds to the intensity of the episode, as it seems there’s shaking and glitches on the monitor for the audience to know that the space station is crashing/being destroyed somehow. 

 

There is constant sound, either as an overlay sound with the glitches or the crashing, or the character talking or laughing at the end. Even when the footage ends (either because of disturbance or the character stopped it) there is a ringing/ high pitch noise. 

The narrative is quite easy to understand with what he’s trying to do, however, if you haven’t watched the full episode it will be confusing because you don’t know what he’s referring to. 

The camera is always shaking, and there’s glitch interference on the monitor to give the effect of the station crashing - as well as the interior falling apart. This clip is at the end of the episode to explain the reason for the constant POV shots or security camera angles of the episode. Having this at the end keeps the audience watching to find out what happened, and it explains why the character is broadcasting the footage (and how he isn’t dead since he died in the footage).

 

Rassmussen is speaking directly to the audience to send out a message to the universe. This is to engage the audience to pay attention to what he is saying for a conclusion of the episode.
