This is the closest city to Auschwitz. These chairs are right outside of the city's ghetto and Jewish quarter. They represent the loss as the Jews were liquidated from the ghetto and their furniture and belongings strewn into the streets.

A four-story-high outstretched arm is the centerpiece of Miami Beach’s Holocaust Memorial in Florida. The arm is tattooed with a number from Auschwitz, and hundreds of small figures cling to it. “The immensity of this tragedy is infinite,” said its sculptor, Kenneth Treister. “To express it artistically, impossible … but I had to try.”

The memorial consists of two elements which symbolize the transition from darkness to light reflecting the Russian military victory to stop the Holocaust of the Jewish people, followed by the establishment of the Jewish state in Israel. The memorial is designed as a maze, in which key tragic events in the history of the Jewish people during the Holocaust are depicted in reliefs.

Budapest, Hungary

Not far from the Hungarian Parliament in Budapest, the Shoes on the Danube Promenade memorializes thousands of Jews killed by fascist militia in 1944 and 1945. The victims were made to remove their shoes before being shot and falling into the river. The sculpted shoes of men, women and children are affixed to the riverbank as a permanent reminder.

These children represent the thousands of children who had to leave their family to survive the war. Many fled to the UK. This was called the Kinder Transport. It included Jewish and non-Jewish children, who fled to the countryside for safety.

Israeli artist Yaacov Agam created the Holocaust memorial in New Orleans’ Woldenberg Park, located on the bank of the Mississippi River in Louisiana. Its nine panels depict different images depending on the viewer’s position, starting with the Star of David and moving to darkness and chaos, then faith, hope and renewal.

The Pit, a memorial to Holocaust victims in Belarus, is built on the site where Nazi forces murdered 5,000 prisoners of the nearby Minsk ghetto. The bronze sculpture, called The Last Way, portrays prisoners forced to descend to their deaths.

Würzburg, Germany

The memorial was built squarely in front of Würzburg’s Central Station, with empty suitcases and luggage on display, as a symbol to the possessions abandoned by the more than 2,000 Jews who were deported to concentration camps from that very train station between 1941 and 1944.

Rio de Janeiro inaugurated a Holocaust memorial that includes a 72-foot-tall tower and overlooks Sugarloaf Mountain, one of South America’s most famous landmarks.The memorial’s tower is divided into 10 parts, representing the Ten Commandments. At its base, the sentence “Thou shalt not kill” is written. A large underground space houses a high-tech interactive exhibition area.

The memorial was built to honour gay men, lesbians, bisexuals and gender-diverse people who have been murdered, tortured and persecuted. It recreates symbols that were predominantly used throughout the Holocaust; a pink triangle to identify homosexual men, and a black triangle to identify lesbian women.

Six glass towers are raised above.Some six columns for six million Jews, others six exhausts of life.Etched on the glass towers are SIX MILLION NUMBERS that flicker with light. On the black granite ramps is incised REMEMBER. Each of the six burning chambers is named after one of the six death camps constructed in Poland, factories whose product was death: CHELMNO TREBLINKA MAJDANEK SOBIBOR AUSCHWITZ-BIRKENAU BELZEC.

This 32 meter high memorial can be found next to the 'Fort of Death', where more than 15.000 Jews were executed by the Germans. The memorial commemorates the Jewish victims who were murdered between 1941 and 1944 in the region of Kaunas.
