Research of plants and trees in Parques des Serras do Porto.

1.  Parques des Serras do Porto. 

2.  Pencil, paper, photo camera, garden hoe, gloves, plant covers, Smart apps: iNaturalist, Plant identifier. 

3.  Identification of plant species: Eucalyptus lobulus, Quercus robur, Alnus glutinosa, Salix atrocinerea, Quercus suber, Arbustus unedo, Crataegu smonogyna, Pinus pinaster, Fraxinus excelsior, Erica cinerea, Dryopteris guanchica, Drosophyllum lusutanicum. We planted Arbustus unedo. 

4.  Due to unfavorable weather conditions, the identification of certain plant species has been difficult. Following the activity, we learned new things about autochthonous plants and about the impact of human interventions over biodiversity. Original from Australia, the eucalyptus was introduced in Portugal with the objective to prevent the erosion by afforestation and later the wood of eucalyptus became raw material for the industry of pulp and paper. Eucalyptus forests cover a quarter of the forests  surface of Portugal. In present eucalyptus forests are spreading fast and represent a danger for the autochthonous trees species. Eucalyptus is a very big water consumer, draining the humidity of soil fast, also being unfavorable because of the toxins it contains.

3.  Quality of air was good, 13 degree Celsius, light breeze, rainy weather. We identified insects of aquatic environment: Blue Emperor, Common water strider, bloodworms; terrestrial insects: Clouded Yellow, Small White, Buff-tailed bumblebee, Common carder bee, White spotted rose beetle, Dragonflies, Grasshoppers.

4.  Quality of air was good, 13 degree Celsius, light breeze, rainy weather. 
 By the end of this activity we have learned how important it is to keep the water clean because it houses a lot of amphibian species and aquatic insects but also a main source of water. Another thing we have learned is the support of the community because in this farm, families come and cultivate what they want for their own consumption, practising  a sort of durable agriculture. This type of urban agriculture is beneficial both for the ecosystem as well as for preservation and improving environmental factors. We consider the establishment of more farms such as this, in which environmental factors should be protected, but also achieve community agricultural production, representing the future of a durable community.

Research and discovery of new information regarding waste recycling in Lipor. We discussed the importance of selective collection of household waste and industrial waste.

1.  Lipor-Intermunicipal Waste Management Centre.

3.  Indicators to be analyzed: The quality of environment was good and organised, the quality of air was decent. 

4.  Through the activity at the „Lipor” headquarters we found the categories of waste which can be recycled and how these can be recycled in a stable way becoming raw material for new products, such as: 

·    With 5 recycled plastic bottles we can make a T-shirt;

·    With a ton of cardboard we can save 20 trees;

·    Through the recycling of one ton of glass we save 1.2 ton of raw material (soda, sand, feldspar);

·    Recycling a ton of steel means saving 1.28 tons of solid waste and 1.5 tons of iron ore;

·    By recycling a ton of plastic we can save up to 800 tons of crude oil.
