I'm going to give a small background story first on them. They had met when my grandfather was stationed in Japan in the USNAVY. My grandmother was a Geisha at the time. They could barely understand eachother somewhat due to the language barrier. They only had one child, my father, Peter Aguilar. My father's aunts were only ones in Japan that adored him though since not everyone approved of the relationship. Because of my grandfather being Filipino and not full Japanese. When my father was a young child, my grandfather essentially kidnapped him and took him to America. There was nothing my grandmother could do because of the language barrier. So at a young age, my father thought my grandmother just simply didn't care which wasn't the case. He had wound up in foster homes due to my grandfather being moved around in the USNAVY still. It was only later when my father was a young man that he found out my grandmother was dying from breast cancer. So after many years of no contact and being told she abandoned him, he set out for Japan to say his goodbyes. I'm not really sure how the story officially ended to be honest. My father had kept in contact with relatives in Japan after my grandmother's passing but then that had stopped for some reason. I'll never know as my dad had subsequently passed from cancer back in 2015 as well. So now that both my grandparents have been long deceased and I never got the chance to meet them, I had wanted to focus on them for this project. My creative process was to try and initially focus on both of them however, the project itself ended up being more one sided on my grandmother. I don't really have many things of my grandfather. Aside from a few pictures and a magazine. The magazine I had really wanted to include in this but couldn't find due to us moving to a new house recently. So the only stuff I was really to include of my grandfather were the food, gps glasses, and glass jars I stumbled upon. The jars I found were neat since they had the golden gate bridge on them. Which my grandfather later worked and resided in SF for his later years. So I thought that was perfect. I will go into further details below each picture. As for the main elements and principles within. There is color popping from the collage which I wanted to be the main focus. As the project is based on them.  Everything else I wanted to be either mute or black or white. There's a variety in the containers used for each piece. Such as the shoe box for the clothing items, a plastic bag for the food, glass jars for the letters. The collage itself brings emphasis onto both of my grandparents from the halos ordained behind them and the rays of light shining in the background. I kinda placed them in chronological order. The box closest to the background is what he did first which was the marines and the box farthest from the background is what he did last, or in this case, what he didn’t get to do. For this project I wanted to do it on a family member that I have no memory of as well as never heard of before. I asked my grandmother for some help and she recommended Grandma Mary. She was able to give me a run down on her personality based on what she remembered of her. I also asked my mom if she knew anyone else who would have some information but unfortunately all I was able to get was some gossip and a rumor that was more than likely true. When I was thinking on how I wanted to put the box together that really shown a lot of her personality. She was a hoarder (or in her words, a collectors) and was kind of messy. She hated cleaning and picking up stuff. So I wanted it to appear cluttered but also placed in a manner that all components can be seen. I wanted to make sure that the collage, without my great great grandmothers photos, was seen as well. For this I wanted to choose items with muted colors to give off this aged affect. I wanted to place the items in a way that will force you to look in multiple directions rather than making the viewer focus on one area. She passed away last year on the 28th of December so it will be a full year now. She was a devout catholic and she was always visiting the Our Lady of Guadalupe church when she was in better health. She is also the kindest person I have ever met. No matter what, she always loved all of her children/grandchildren. I conducted the research by asking my family members about things I may not have known about her like how she got here and where else she had lived. My dad especially was a great help to me in gathering this information. Compiling my dossier was pretty easy since I knew her well and a good portion of the things that I used in my containers are items that I had directly received from her. I used the elements of design by using variety. Variety played a big part in my piece. An example of this is my collage and how it looks compared to the two containers used on the bottom of the box. They are directly lined up with each other and are more neat looking while the collage looks randomized compared to it. I also used alignment. I though the snake object was a perfect center focal point for the dossier, and it fit perfectly inside the larger of the two smaller compartments. By doing this I used the principle of emphasis due to how the snake tends to be the first place the viewer's eyes look. I also took the opportunity to incorporate the element of color. I definitely was able to create a feeling of balance based upon making sure not too many parts of the dossier were heavily on one side. And there is a feeling of unity with how the elements of line, color, and shape really work together to create a pleasing image were the viewer's eye can move around freely after leaving the focal point of the snake that tends to stand out in the center of the piece. With that there is variety, and a sense of busyness, but I would venture to say that it is an organized and balanced busyness. It's a little hard to tell in these pictures but the circle in the center of the main collage is an embossing stamp for Ju-San Corp., the construction company Yori worked for. My interpretation of 'container' got kind of... loose. I just couldn't figure out how to fit my ideas into a box- but since it's a time traveling care package, I think it makes sense for the individual items to be 'packaged' into a mobile instead of a more standard shipping container. The items are kept together by a red string (of fate?) rather than cardboard and packing tape.
There's a lot of repetition in this: three items for my grandfather based on his tastes, and three based on things I'd like to tell him about. The style of frames divide which items fall into which category. Three people: my grandfather, my mother, and me. Clothes, food, and tools are in sets of two. There are two strands of red yarn for each connection. I had some difficulty choosing my final arrangement since there was a lot of stuff to fit into a relatively small box. I decided to add a panel to the right side and a drawer in the middle to make the box look less box-like. I wanted to keep most of the colors a bit muted as to not draw the eye to one particular area. We get caught up in the big things we wish for in the future that we tend to waste the time we have. It is good to prepare for the future but you can’t neglect the present while doing so. Love life for what it is. The way the cold night air feels, the thrill you get when talking to someone new, the way your cheeks hurt after laughing too much, staying up all night until the early morning sun seeps through the windows, teary eyes after a good yawn, the warmth of hugging someone you love. The breeze of life moves too fast for us to slow it, the best we can do is notice the small things as we continue on our journey of life. 

Live without regrets. We are only given one life, as far as we know, and there is so much in this world to experience. Experience as much of it as you can because you never know the opportunities it could bring. Permanently leaving my hometown in Italy was terrifying but I knew there was so much more for me to experience out there. Seize the day. Do the things you want to do today for we don’t know how many tomorrows one really has. 

I know you put too much pressure on yourself. You don’t need to be good at something to enjoy it. Do the things you like even if you aren’t good at them. Everyone starts from a seed at some point. Life is too short to care about those who judge your ability. The sooner you realize that, the more true to yourself you'll be and the happier you’ll become. Rather to be temporarily embarrassed than eternally regretful. In the end, nobody will remember the things you deem embarrassing so you might as well make your life the most enjoyable it can be. Make beautiful memories. 

Chase your dreams. You are capable of doing anything you truly set out to do. Who’s stopping you, other than yourself? Work hard but remember to treat yourself kindly. Too often I overworked myself to get somewhere in this world only to look back and wish I had spent more time doing things that made me happier. I was surviving rather than living. Instead, live your life in full bloom. You have big dreams and a bright future ahead of yourself but don't forget to enjoy your youth.

I decided to focus my assemblage around my grandparents lives and their traditions. I don't get to see my grandparents very often, but I love and admire both of them. My grandparents had lived in Guadalajara which is where they started their family. They had 5 kids before they decided to come to the U.S. for a better life. I had always listened to my grandparents tell me stories of their lives whenever I would be able to visit them. They both own a cow farm that my grandpa has been taking care of for most of his life. The items I used to represent them are a watch, tamales, the letter and the two tools. The watch represents a part of my grandpa's morning routine of putting on a watch every day. The tamales are actual tamales my grandma made that my mom brought back after a recent visit. they remind me of my childhood visits. The letter is one that I wrote to my family that my grandparents would tell me stories about. The rope represents a tool my grandpa would use often his ranch, and the barn is something that would have made his job a little easier. I love the color and form the locker has that gives mixes an industrial look with the bright red that adds a warmth. I also featured some blue yarn that had different variations of brightness on it throughout the composition. The yarn was used as lined to help create rhythm and unity. The blue yarn being places on the watch, tamales, rolled up letter and around the bases of the two levels creates a sense of unity. The yarn being throughout the composition also utilizes repetition of some lines and colors to guide the eye towards the items. I also used thin white tape strips in the background of the bottom level and the top left of the top level. The tape helped create a balance and add to the harmony of the piece. I also tried to create a balance with the forms of the items. I only got to know them for a short while before they passed away. I admit, this project was intimidating solely because I had no clue what to use and how to describe them. The only way I could was to ask my mother. I wasn’t sure how to go about it until I just bit the bullet and asked. I’m glad I did because I didn’t know how much I wanted to know them. My grandpa was a migrant worker. He traveled all over the country to work on the fields until he reached Phoenix, Arizona where he met Esther Ruiz, my grandma. They waited years to get married. After an accident from landscaping, my grandpa wasn’t able to work hard labor. Which led him to be a jeweler. My grandma was a teacher who taught students who struggled with the English language. My grandpa unfortunately was held at gunpoint in his shop which traumatized him into working at home. They have 5 children, the youngest one being my mother.
I used the principle of balance in my assemblage. This shelf belongs to my grandmother. There is a sense of symmetry, but asymmetrical in terms of items placed on each side. The warm color of the container gives off a homey feel, with the added background color of red and yellow from the collage.
