*Topic: * Face Covering Facts/Cardinal and Ordinal numbers

Hello everyone – The topics for this week are about Face Covering Facts from the resources below, and Cardinal/Ordinal numbers. Please use the resources below available in different languages to talk about face covering facts. There are many ways you can use these resources to practice English. For example:

1.      You can dictate the sentences (or words for low levels) from the resources below and the learners can either type the dictation in the chat box of zoom, or they can write it down on a piece of paper.

2.      You can ask learners to read the sentences in English, and then compare the words and meanings in their own languages.

3.      You can do a document search activity where you say a word in the document and learners have to skim through the document to find that word. You can pick 10-20 words that you think would be challenging for your learners.

The second topic is on the difference between cardinal and ordinal numbers. Numbers is a tricky topic in many languages. There is so much to work with in this topic. For example, you can work on the pronunciation of 15 and 50, 16 and 60 and so on… certain numbers are hard to pronounce for certain languages. For example, generally for Spanish speakers it is hard to pronounce (5) like 55 or 265 or 1555 (anything with five because it contains the bilabial “v” and some Spanish speakers generally have a hard time with “V”. For Russian speakers, any combination numbers that start and sometimes end with the voiceless dental non-sibilant fricative (TH) is challenging. For example, third, fourth and so on. It would be useful and fun to work on addresses in Oregon. For example, 1555 SW 3rd Ave, Portland, OR 97201. In this topic the internet is your friend and so please feel free to use any resources that you think would be useful for the learner. Thank you so much!

There is so much sad news and negativity this year that refocusing from that energy into something that brings some positive thoughts is a necessity. Learning about and celebrating different holidays is something that many like to do. Besides, it is important to learn about the different holidays that are celebrated in the US and in the world among certain groups. Rosh Hashanah is a great example of a holiday that we all need to learn about. Topic:  COVID-19 Virus Prevention and Protection

Hello everyone – So last week we worked on what COVID19 is, and what are the symptoms of COVID19. This week please continue working on the same sheet and additional prevention and protection sheets shared in here in English and multiple other languages. Specifically, how does coronavirus spread? how severe is COVID-19? who is at risk for getting the coronavirus? how can I protect myself and others?

Given that this topic will be running until the end of the year, It is allowed to use other topics that are interesting, important, and relevant to your learners. However, please make sure to go over the COVID19 topic for at least 30 min of the session. I will be checking in with all the teachers to see what has been covered with every learner. Thank you!

Topic: What is COVID19? And what are the symptoms of COVID19?

Hi everyone – This week we will focus on a topic that affects all of us and especially our learners. There is a lot of misinformation on what COVID19 is, how it spreads, and how to prevent it. So, we are going to use OHA recommended materials and resources to teach English and bring awareness about the virus to our learners. 

This first week, please go over only what is COVID19? and what are the symptoms of COVID19 using the resources provided below. Please remember not to ask the learners whether they had COVID19 or how to treat it because we are not professionals in this field. It is not our job. Our job is to teach English while using a topic that affects our learners and therefore the language practiced is relevant to the experiences of the learners. We will be inviting Health Community Interpreters (CHIs) to some sessions to do what is called “Transcreation”. Transcreation is adapting a message from one language to another, while maintaining its intent, style, tone, and context. In addition, we will be inviting some Community Health Workers to share their expertise about COVID19 to our learners, and their knowledge can be used to teach English.
 
Please send to learners the link below with their native language version of this resource. Please ask them to pass this information along to other family members and their network. Have them count how many people they have given this information to and in your next session ask them if they have shared it with anyone. If you have any questions please reach out to me on here.
