2e. I. Summarized Message of Article

This article is basically discussing both sides of the issue with embryonic stem cells. The use of human embryos for therapeutic use causes ethical issues since many can consider it the destruction of an unborn human, but the main purpose of using them can be why some believe that it outweighs the ethical concerns. However, the two moral principles of preventing suffering and respecting the value of human life cannot be fulfilled at the same time.

II. How does it relate?

This article relates to section 1.1 of cell biology. According to the IB Diploma Biology textbook, embryonic stem cells "Can only be obtained from discarded embryos from in vitro fertilization (IVF)" (Walpole, et al. 9). Also, "There is much debate about the ethics of doing this kind of work, and many people feel that the destruction of an embryo to obtain stem cells is morally unacceptable" (Walpole, et al. 9). Both sides of the argument are related to the use of stem cells since it requires the use of discarded embryos, but by using them in the treatment of diseases or therapeutically, they provide significant advances for scientists.

III. My Position on this Issue

In my opinion, I believe that the use of embryonic stem cells for therapeutic use and treatment of diseases outweigh the ethical concerns that come with using discarded human embryos. As the article says, "But embryonic stem cell research could lead to the discovery of new medical treatments that would alleviate the suffering of many people." (Embryonic stem cell research: an ethical dilemma) Another reason why this societal issue should actually be used is when the article says, "Supporters of ESC research generally feel that using cells from these surplus blastula for research and developing medical treatments." (Embryonic stem cell research: an ethical dilemma) When scientists use embryonic stem cells, they come from embryos that were discarded due to there being a surplus of them. If this is the case, I believe that the advances and potential to significantly contribute to the treatment of diseases is worth it.

An attribute that I feel I need to improve on is being "reflective". I believe that at times I kind of rush through my learning experiences instead of taking some time to reflect on my strengths and limitations on the topic. I sometimes struggle to analyze different situations and what I could have done better or worse, which is why I think that this is an area I need to focus on to reflect on my own experiences.

I liked doing this activity because I implemented exercise (which I love) into the Biology course. It was one of the few times that I could mix one of my hobbies with the course, so I felt excited to complete this task.
