My Self-Growth

Throughout this semester I feel that I have grown a lot as a person. At the start of the semester I really didn’t talk to anyone. I was very quiet and shy and didn’t want to really talk to anyone or become friends with anyone. I thought it would be best for me to just focus on school for the next 4 years since nursing is hard and involves a lot of work. However, I quickly realized that I needed friends. I have met so many amazing people this semester who I know will be with me through the rest of my college career. I also became less shy because these people have supported me and believed in me. They have made me realize that I can accomplish anything that I put my mind to, even if it scares me. I think Tattoos on the Heart has helped inspire this growth because many of the people in the book wanted to get help and wanted people to be there for them and believe in them and I feel that that is something many people want. About a month ago, I met someone at work who has been through a lot in the past and a lot of it being gang related. Talking to him has made me realize that it is important to be there for others and see the good in them no matter what. Talking to him has inspired me to grow as a person by being there for people no matter what and being honest with people by telling the truth. He has made me realize that telling the truth can be scary, but it is the best thing to do. He has helped me make baby steps towards being honest and open with my family especially at work. The first step was telling my family that I talk to this co-worker outside of work even though they told me that he isn’t good for me. Being honest with my family has made realize that all they want to do is be there for me like I am for other people. My co-worker has taught me so much about being loving and accepting of everyone no matter what they have been through and I feel that Tattoos on the Heart has done the same thing. All of this has made me strive to be a better person and made me realize that being there for people can make their day or week so much better.

Theme- Tattoos on the Heart

In Tattoos on the Heart the theme is acceptance. This is one of them many themes in the book, but it's one that stood out to me the most. This is because not only did the gang members want to be accepted by others, they also wanted to be accepted by themselves. This is shown when Boyle writes about how the homies look into the mirror and see that they are “EMPTY” when they should really be seeing themselves as “ENOUGH” (Boyle 193). This shows that Boyle wants the homies to be accepting of themselves by seeing that they are enough and that by accepting themselves as having the ability to do what they want will get them to where they want to be. First you have to accept yourself before you can accept other things.

Theme- Fire in the Ashes

In Fire in the Ashes the theme is success. Throughout the book this is shown through the stories of people who have gone through hard times and have changed their lives for the better, even if it was in a small way. Lisette’s story is one that really showed this. She came from a neighborhood where she didn’t really have much. One day her and her family decided to take up an amazing opportunity and move to a small town in Montana. Though things weren’t going too well with her family, Lisette stayed strong and managed to pull through to make a better life for herself and her family. This story fits into the theme of success because Lisette came from a neighborhood where she didn’t have much and changed her life into on that she once only dreamed of.

In Living Buddha, Living Christ the theme is mindfulness. This is the theme because throughout the book Thich Nhat Hanh shows the importance of being aware of everything in your life. This is really shown when he talks about being grateful for everything that you have in life. It can be the simplest of things, but it is important to be aware of it and be grateful you have it in your life. This shows the theme of mindfulness because a big part of being mindful is being aware of everything that life has to offer.

The Book that Left the Biggest Tattoo on MY Heart

The book that resonated with me the most is Tattoos on the Heart. This book resonated with me the most because the stories that Boyle shared were really touching. It also made me realize the importance of accepting everyone for who they are and seeing past the things that they have done in the past whether they are good or bad. One of the stories that stood out to me the most is Rigo’s. This is because it really shows how much parents can love their kids. Rigo had been at a detention facility for awhile and his mother takes 7 buses every Sunday just to see her son. This stood out to me because it really shows that parents will love their kids no matter what they have done in their past. This really left a tattoo on my heart because I feel like we take what our parents do for us for granted sometimes. No matter what our parents will always be here for us and want to protect us from doing wrong. They will always be accepting. Even though I’m not a parent this story has made me realize that it is important to be accepting of others and seeing past things that happened in their past. Most of all it made me realize to love people for who they are and not for what they’ve done or have to offer.

Reflection and Mindfulness

I feel that reflection and mindfulness are to things that have really developed in me this semester. They have developed a lot through writing reflections on my CBL experiences and reflecting on things that we have done in class. Mindfulness has really developed in me this semester through talking about it in class. This is because it's not really something that I have thought about before. I learned that it is important to be aware of things that I have in my life and this helps me be aware of what others are going through. My perception of what it is to live mindfully and reflectively is that a person should take the time to think about what is going on in their life and being thankful for all that they have. It is important to step back and think about things in order to get a better understanding of yourself and others. What hinders this for me is being stressed. This is because when I’m stressed out I have so many thoughts in my mind that I can’t really think straight. What helps me with doing this in my life is writing reflections. This is because it makes me really think about what is going on in my life.

There are many areas of my life that I want to reflect on and develop more. One of them is to become a more open and accepting person. This is because I feel like I tend to shut people out for no reason. For me to accomplish this I plan on being more accepting of myself first. I feel that I tend to be really hard on myself sometimes. I plan on working on this by letting small things go and not letting them get to me like they use to. This can be anything from getting a bad grade on an assignment to having a small fight with a friend. Another area I want to work on is honesty. This is because I feel that I haven’t really been completely honest with my family and friends lately and it has really been bothering me. I plan on improving this by telling them exactly how I feel about things that have been going on.

Nicole, I really enjoyed reading your Padlet thoughts/reflection on the books and topics from the semester! I am glad you felt you have grown this semester in that you have made so many friends and that you are helping your co-worker…that is great that you are reaching out to him and seeing his potential, as Greg did in so many young people. I am also glad that you want to continue your growth and become more accepting of yourself and others. Also, that you want to be more accepting of yourself and more honest with your family and friends…these areas of growth will leave you feeling happier and more content…how you want to be. Overall, Nicole, your Padlet was very well done…the images and background were visually appealing and, once again, your responses to the questions were perceptive and thought provoking. You are a special person, one who I have enjoyed having in class and getting to know and learn from. You have a great future ahead of you as a nurse…I think you have chosen the right profession...it fits you!
