The play Medea is about a woman named Medea who helped her husband in getting the golden fleece, she helped him kill the serpent that guards the fleece with her potions. Later her husband betrayed her and went off to marry the Princess for status leading her to do vaguer things as an act of revenge.

Betrayal, Death, Family problems. These themes should make the audience feel shocked, angry, maybe even sad. After all, she kills her brother, her husband leaves her, everything just falls apart for her.

I've modernized it to a woman going through a nasty divorce, her husband has cheated on her and the chorus is now her sister, but the sister is blissfully unaware of what Medea is planning to do.

Jason - Jason is Medea's ex husband who cheated on her for a woman he saw as prettier and better, a younger more energetic lady. He is unloyal and rude.

The Children - The children are still innocent, fearful, and confused, everything around them is changing so fast, and they don't understand who's this new woman with dad and why mums so angry all the time.

Greek theatre - Costumes

A chiton (tunic), a draped garment like a cloak (a himation). Soft leather boots or high-platformed buskins. The masks are also a huge part of the costumes. If an actor/ess switches masks that means they have switched to another character in the play, then switch again to become another. It's quick and easy and unique.

My setting will be in the living room of a house, a couch in the middle and coffee table just in front. It would be night and I will set the scene by playing sounds of crickets, frogs and owls quietly in the background, along with a slow car every now and again.

Costuming

Medea will be wearing a red shirt, black pants and socks. (no shoes in the house.)
The Chorus (Medea’s “Sister”) will be wearing a beige sweater, black maxi skirt and socks. Medea’s outfit is mean to be bold, while The Chorus is meant to be soft, almost comforting.

Multimedia and lighting

Soft classical music that turns more aggressive. The lighting will start off as soft and maybe blue, then slowly move to be brighter and possibly red to show anger.

Tension and Mood

Tension - Tension of task and relationship. She's plotting to kill her sons as revenge on Jason, using the fact that he was their father to hurt him more.

Mood - The main mood is a mix of anger and shock. I will create these moods on stage through movement, facial expressions, sounds, sudden actions.

Focus

My main focus will be to make the audience feel bad for Medea, but then as the scene progresses I want them to feel more concerned and shocked. As in “aww, she’s been through so much.. I hope she gets better.” to “Oh what the hell, why would she think about doing that??”

I will use the space in the scene to make a cozy atmosphere.. but at the same time I will manipulate it to seem like there is something sinister happening behind the cozy front.
