Time here informs us of Isla’s hope for a brighter future, it comes slowly and she must be patient. Despite her difficult and dark past there is always hope for a better future and that can come about through love and kindness

Isla’s mum is withdrawn and not wholly present in her children’s lives. It seems that Isla bears a great deal of responsibility towards her younger brother because of her mother’s absence. There is no other chapter in the novel which shows Isla’s mother showing much care, and gentleness towards Isla.

1.	How does this chapter develop Bo and Isla’s relationship? Quote to support your answer. The chapter opens with the children playing in the backyard on their own. After Isla injured herself it is Bo who comes to nurse her. He does so gently and it is a tender scene. “there are so many little accidents on the ship,’ he said ‘ I am good at fixing people up.” This speaks to his gentle and caring nature. Isla is afraid of the dark and light is symbolic of comfort and hope for her. “the sun was coming through the window and in through the skylight and all the wood panelling held warmth. I almost felt sleepy then. I wanted to close my eyes.”Bo is strongly associated with light in this chapter. Both Isla and Bo are afraid of the light and they share a bond. Bo shows kindness towards her and she is changed by it. Good quotes: “a small island that was light for the whole summer, and I knew I would like that very much. To be in the light. I would like that.”

2.	Isla’s mother is contrasted with Bo in this chapter in a memory. What do we learn about Isla’s mother and father in this chapter? What purpose could Parrett have for including this memory in the chapter? Parrett contrasts the lack of concern that Isla’s mother has when she returns home with an injury. Quote: I screamed out for Dad to stop, but he couldn’t hear me, or at least he didn’t stop … By then there was a ring of flesh scraped from my calf and blood was seeping into my shoe.” “I never even had to lie because Dad sad, ‘she hurt her leg but it’s all fine now.’ Mum never even looked at the bandage. She just walked into the kitchen and started cooking dinner.”There is a conflict created for Isla as she is asked to lie to her mum by her father and this suggest a distrustful relationship. The fact that Isla’s mother showed no concern over the injury is a powerful indication that there is little care and concern shown towards Isla. There is evidence she is neglected. It must have been very difficult for Isla to find her mum didn’t care. This is contrasted by the gentle ministering of Bo. He shows her a different way of being, she is valued and cared for. Parrett uses kindness as a powerful force with which change can be instigated
