The American soldiers are expected to just sleep and get a good nights rest like nothing is wrong. With one mess up or if anything goes badly the next day, they know that they will die, and their friends will too. When Tom Sawyer got injured with a gunshot wound, Jim took Tom to a nearby doctor in order to save him, and does not think about what he could lose in the meantime. Jim could totally lose his freedom, and he puts that aside in order to help a friend of Huck. This shows a ton of courage because he puts others in front of himself. With the sense of naturalism throughout the story, this creates a sort of uncontrolled nature as well as being trapped at sea in a small boat.
