2. | Tainted water supplies affect infants. One study found that E.coli fervently contaminates infant formula when areas store municipal water rather than treating it immediately. Around 41% of households in the study appeared to have E.coli present in the water they used for infants’ formula, increasing the infant mortality rate. Fortunately, since 2010, the infant mortality rate in Côte d’Ivoire has decreased from 107.2 per 1,000 births to 80.9 per 1,000 births.

 

Birds include flamingo, cormorant, osprey, kestrel, plover, lark, and other migrants. Reptiles include monitors, other lizards, and land snakes. Life in the seas around Qatar is considerable and varied, including prawn, king mackerel, shark, grouper, and swordfish.
 In these depressions colluvial soils made up of calcareous loam, sandy loam and sandy clay loam have accumulated to depths ranging from 30 to 150 cm, overlying limestone debris and bedrock.

Offshore reserves of petroleum and natural gas have been exploited since 1995 and are a significant source of export revenue for the country. Mineral resources exploited in Côte d’Ivoire include diamonds and gold. Deposits of iron ore, bauxite, and manganese also exist but have not been extensively developed, although iron ore is mined near Mount Nimba. 

About three-fifths of the country’s power is supplied by thermal stations, with hydroelectric sources supplying the remainder. Expansion of thermal capacity utilizing natural gas has been the focus of energy projects since the mid-1990s. Crude petroleum is refined in Abidjan to meet local needs, and refined products are exported to Mali, Burkina Faso, and other countries.

There is a well-known gulf called the Gulf of Guinea,
which is located extremely
close to the Ivory Coast. 

The Ivory Coast has a
significant coastline along the Gulf of Guinea in the Atlantic Ocean, providing
access to trade, fishing, and transportation. The country's terrain varies from
savannahs and plateaus in the north to forested areas and hills in the center.
The southern region consists of low-lying coastal plains suitable for
agriculture and is the most populated area. Major rivers like the Bandama,
Sassandra,
Cavally, and Comoe flow through the country. The Guinean Highlands in the west
are home to mountains and hills, with Mount Nimba
being a notable peak. The Ivory Coast
boasts national parks and reserves, including Comoé,
Taï,
and Marahoué.
Its climate is tropical, with wet and dry seasons. Natural resources include
gold, diamonds, iron ore, cocoa, and coffee. The country also has islands, such
as the Ehotilé
Islands and Îles
des Goélands,
known for their biodiversity. Lake Kossou,
created by the Kossou Dam, is the
largest lake in the Ivory Coast
and serves for irrigation and hydroelectric power generation.

This land area is approximately 80% of the area of California. Ivory Coast is thus the 28th biggest country in Africa and in terms of area ranked 69th worldwide. More than half of all residents (53%) live within cities. Around one in nine residents' lives in Abidjan alone. 

Globalization in Côte d’Ivoire has had a strong effect on developmental issues such as schools, which affects the individual citizens the most directly and encourages political involvement. Programs such as the “Education for AH” conducted by the World bank give primary access to 125 million children in West Africa. (Turco 5) There are flaws in these systems as they do not receive enough attention or oversight. Still, the widespread opportunity for education has led to development in the political socialization of citizens, the support for the democratic process, and political ideologies present in avid political parties. In studies on health and development such as Welander’s, the number of years in school for women had positive effects on infant mortality (Welander 25). When people are more developed and healthier, the politics of the nation are stronger, as is the support of the government.

Agriculture has been affected strongly by globalization in Cote d’Ivoire. “Using cheap labor from Burkina Faso, Mali, and Liberia and technocrats from Europe and Lebanon, Côte d’Ivoire built a stable domestic environment, ripe for foreign investment alongside a booming agricultural industry powered by cocoa exports (Klass 4).” These cocoa experts have led Côte d’Ivoire to be the highest cocoa producing country in the world, surpassing their rich neighbors like Ghana and Nigeria. The cheap foreign labor brings with its cultural and religious influences, which have effects on the nation’s political landscape. The current President, Ouattara, is a member of the Dioula tribe, which is comprised mostly of North African Muslim immigrants and is very different from the conservative Catholic leaders like the first president Boigny, who led the country with a one-party system for 30 years. Because agriculture is so prevalent in the coastal tropical nation, foreign influence on the agricultural sphere has had a significant political effect.
