I learned to use such reading strategies as predicting, connecting, and summarizing to extract deeper information about the texts.

OLC4O Unit 3 Summative

In several aspects, this was one of the units that assisted me in enhancing my reading, writing as well as communication skills tremendously. By employing the strategy of predicting what would come next and wondering about the text, I was capable of getting more involved in narrative stories and comprehending them more. This caused more interesting and valuable reading. The story prompt that I liked most about the unit was writing the flash fiction story since I was required to use limited words but needed to be creative. Designing characters, writing a conflict and giving it an ending that makes it satisfying to read, being limited by such a strict number of words forced me to learn to use my words carefully and write more effectively in general. Several methods worked quite well and are useful to me so far, and one of them is marking the texts as I read them. This enables me to bring out important pointers and notes that facilitate my comprehension and subsequent writing. Also, the examination of learning orally allowed me not only to push further on my thoughts but also to articulate my ideas more self-assuredly. I am looking forward to using these techniques in future tasks to further develop into a reader and a writer.

OLC4O Unit 3 Summative: Senuthi Wijesekera

This course has enhanced my ability to read, write, and communicate with purpose. The use of event prediction strategies, visualizing the scenes, and relating details to previous knowledge were the main concepts that I took away from this unit, which made reading the text more interesting and made my answers more accurate in the context of the reading comprehension task.

The flash fiction writing task has helped me become a more conscious user of language since the story has to be formulated with extra precision without using unnecessary words and getting my thoughts across in an effective manner, while adhering to the word limit. This gave me an appreciation for short storytelling and words being used purposely to relay ideas. I mainly enjoyed doing flash fiction writing. It was both intellectually freeing and creatively challenging, and involved striking a balance between being creative and organized. It showed me that word constraints in fact, can enable greater creativity.

Active annotation is one of the strategies that I will bring forward as progress in the course. Underlining the main points, the change of themes and unfamiliar vocabulary expanded my attention when reading and enhanced the quality of my answers. This habit will not only be useful in my next classes and the future, and processes such as summary writing but it will also ensure that any time I read something my engagement with the text is puposeful.

OCLO4 Unit 3 Summative

Haroon Mohammed Ifran

Unit 3 helped me develop reading, writing, and summarizing competencies. I was taught to use reading strategies such as predicting, questioning and connecting which improve the comprehension of texts. The short story comprehension speed task made me pay attention to seeking evidence to justify my responses whereas; in the flash fiction writing speed task, I was required to think of conveying a full story using extremely minimal number of words. It also taught me to appreciate accurate use of language as well as the importance of each sentence carrying a message. The skills of writing summary also became more explicit to me as I learnt to find the main idea, only include the most significant information, and create a smooth flow of writing, with the help of transition words.

My favorite exercise was the flash fiction story as I had time to become creative yet had a structure to work with. The most difficult thing to deal with was making it shorter without losing the emotion or essence.

The tip that I will not abandon in the future assignments is the re-reading and editing of my work on the clarity. This will make my ideas not only correct but also provide ease in followability to the reader.

OLC4O Unit 3 Summative

By Janmi Senaratne

This unit helped me see how reading, writing, and speaking skills all build on each other. I learned how making connections between the story and my own life can help me understand the tone and why characters behave the way they do during reading tasks. Writing the flash fiction story taught me how to create a complete plot using very few words, which made me pay close attention to every detail.

Narrative writing was my favorite part because it gave me a chance to be creative while also following a clear structure. It was challenging to balance emotional depth with keeping the story short, but doing that really made the final piece stronger.

One strategy I will keep using in future assignments is starting with a clear hook. In my story, I began with an unexpected event, which set the mood right away and encouraged the reader to keep going. I think this technique works well in any kind of writing or presentation, so I plan to use it in essays, speeches, and even formal reports to grab attention from the very beginning.
