By encouraging exploration, creative eco-design, digital competence, and sustainable daily habits, the initiative helps young learners develop cognitive, social, and life skills. The goal is to nurture responsible, environmentally conscious citizens who understand the importance of caring for the planet and their community.

With great dedication, they brought along a poster illustrating an issue that had caught their attention: litter left on the ground, which dirties the town and makes it less pleasant and less livable.

Through their words and drawings, the children delivered a clear message to the mayor: this situation must change. Action is needed, and everyone must take responsibility, not only the youngest, but above all the adults, to care for the environment and their community.

We are pleased to share with you the presentation of our Little Hands, Green Lands project. These slides showcase some of the most meaningful experiences the children enjoyed throughout the year, discovering the importance of recycling, sustainability, and caring for our planet through hands-on activities, exploration, and play.

Throughout this project, I wanted children to discover that environmental education is not taught only through words, but above all through meaningful experiences.

Our journey began with exploration: walking in nature, observing our surroundings, collecting natural materials, experimenting with clay and recycled objects, and learning to appreciate the beauty and value of the environment. Step by step, children's curiosity grew into awareness, and awareness gradually became responsibility. The project naturally evolved from observation to action. During our outdoor explorations, children noticed litter in the streets around their school. This authentic discovery led them to reflect, discuss possible solutions, document what they had observed, and finally write a letter to the Mayor of Bernareggio. Visiting the Town Hall and presenting their message gave them the opportunity to experience active citizenship and understand that even young children can make their voices heard. The collaboration with our European eTwinning partners further enriched this journey. Through shared activities, online meetings, the common logo, the collaborative My Green Book, the digital Waste Map, games, and Earth Day initiatives, children discovered that caring for the planet is a shared responsibility that goes beyond the boundaries of their own school and country.

One of the greatest strengths of this project was its interdisciplinary nature. Science, art, language, digital competence, outdoor education, creativity and civic education blended naturally into a single learning path. Children learned by exploring, creating, playing, cooperating and reflecting together, developing not only knowledge but also empathy, critical thinking, problem-solving skills and respect for nature.

The enthusiasm shown by the children confirmed that environmental education becomes truly meaningful when it starts from their real experiences and allows them to become active participants in their own community.

I believe that Little Hands, Green Lands has planted more than knowledge: it has planted seeds of responsibility, care and hope. These seeds will continue to grow through the daily choices children make, reminding them that every small action can contribute to building a more sustainable future.

Because little hands, when guided with care, can truly make a big difference.
