On December 26, 1776 Washington and his army retreats to Pennsylvania after being chased out of New York. Washington planned to attack the forces of Hessian mercenaries at Trenton, New Jersey. Washington surrounded them and took a lot of prisoners and supplies. this boosted the moral of the American army.

This finally gave Americans the upper hand in the south because the British had many loyalists in the south prior. The Americans and the French set a trap which the British fell for causing them to surrender at Yorktown, New York.
