Bringing communities together - National theatre

Since 2017, Public Acts has brought together theatres and community organisations across the UK to create extraordinary productions.

Many of the participants are taking part in theatre for the first time, enjoying regular workshops, theatre trips and creative social opportunities.

At the heart of the project is the simple idea of connection, between people, their local communities, and their local theatres. Public Acts aims to help participants to overcome isolation, building community and cohesion among participants from a wide range of backgrounds.

They've been running a women’s drama group since February 2018. It was made to create more opportunities for refugees and asylum seekers to engage creatively and meet other communities living in Leeds.

It focusses on the ways to move through Leeds and the barriers different communities face when travelling through the city.

Tectonic Theatre, from Denver, Colorado, had been experimenting with documentary forms in their community theatre work for several years when 21 year old student Matthew Shepard was beaten to death, in 1998, outside Laramie, Colorado. Collaboratively created and scripted by Moises Kaufman, the play used various sources including interviews with hundreds of local people, writings of those involved in the production and news reports on the subsequent murder trial of Aaron McKinney and Russell Henderson
